Feminism The women's movement has a tremendous obstacle that if not solved will defeat the movement or make it a joke at best. The problem is women themselves. Although women are gradually accepting the challenge of being complete human beings, there are still those who either are too stupid to realize they have a bad deal or too lazy to meet the challenges the movement is offering. However, these women are diminishing in numbers and there will always be imbeciles. But the women's movement itself at times approaches the ridiculous, loses sight of its basic goals and often does not take advantage of its organizations. The women's movement often is sidetracked by the petty and pedantic, Although the use of "chauvinist" words like "mankind" and the generic use of "he" are quite irritating and point up a pervading attitude, women pay too much attention to it. As women prove themselves equal to men, these words probably will cease to be used because the attitude will disappear. The effort of women, then, should be to improve the state of women by improving themselves. As more women successfully meet their challenges, fewer people will continue to advocate that women are inferior and subservient. Women also do not take full advantage of the op portunities they have. In South Carolina, for example, there is a women's commission that is a state agency without an office and with only $10,000 per year to work with. The director of this com mission is a yes-woman who refuses to fight for more funds, staff or office and who does nothing with the money it has. The commission has no real projects and few volunteers. This sloppy performance points up what men have been saying for a long time--that women simply can't make it in a man's world. Women cannot afford to let idiots run their interests. Complaining to men about how women are treated does little good. Most men realize the situation and are not particularly interested in its improvement. Women now must toughen up and ignore the taunts, and prove their equality, instead of just giving lip service to it.
