The appointment of Dr. Pat terson as University President has raised many questions which are still unanswered. It is obvious that the manner in which he was elected leaves a lot to be desired. The issue of student competence to participate in the decision has been mentioned by Libby Isaacs (Gamecock, Feb. 7) and I would like to respond that while there are some incompetent students there are also some incompetent faculty members and administrators. Where does Isaacs draw the line of which incompetent group gets to make some input? Both students and faculty members had only one representative each at a meeting where a decision affecting the entire University was made. Contrary to Isaacs' position, I believe that every segment of the University should have a voice in such an important decision. I can only question Isaacs' definition of education if it does not include getting involved in the immediate environment and ac tively participating. Passive ac ceptence and compliance breeds nothing more than ignorance. While this may be the safest route to take, it is by no means the most effective or realistic way. Perhaps she is just what this University needs someone to remind us mere students that we have to be kept in our place and have no right to participate in decisions affecting us. Is the question of competence also Isaacs' rationale for why no faculty meinbers were allowed to participate, other than through their one representative? The point is that students have little or no voice on the type of education we receive and pay for. We do have our token represen tatives on comm ittees and even in a few cases we have a "say" in policy decisions. However, anyone who believes that this "say" is the rule rather than the exception is operating under a false assump tion. Tokenism is the gift only the elite can afford to give.
