"Professor Tidwell, who is not here now,
protested the ceremonies granting an
honorary degree to General West
moreland. He expressed his conscious
with a little bit of poor taste, but he was not
dismissed. In fact he was even granted
tenure. The faculty votes on the retention
of their own colleagues,and I don't think
that's bad. The granting of tenure is
ideally a faculty decision," said Schwartz.
Schwartz said whether or not a professor
publishes properly effects promotion. "I
do not think he should become a paper
mill, but an active interest in some
research leads to better teaching," he
said. Schwartz believes the need to
publish here is minor compared to other
colleges and that at Carolina, "the
research is supportive of teaching rather
than an aim in itself."
Student opinion also makes a difference
in promotion, according to Schwartz, but

it. "If this teacher evaluation could go on
year after year and the questionaire im
proved, then that is a good formal means
for judgments on faculty retention. If I
were asked for a judgment, I would give a
large weight to student opinion," he said.
Schwartz felt the student poll was "a little
coarse."
Felix said,"The rules the University
purports to live by, it pretty much does
live. There will be dis,tes that arise from
time to time, but these are usually matters
of good faith. It has been a good year."
