Canisius' Larry Fogle, the
nation's leading scorer, was far off
form as Carolina extended its
home floor win streak to 33 by
defeating Canisius 76-58 Monday
night at the Coliseum.
Mark Greiner, who was the
Gamecock assigned to guard Fogle
most of the game, played a
tenacious defense, holding the
nation's top scorer to 18 points, his
lowest total this season.
"I was looking forward to the
challenge (of guarding Fogle),
" Greiner said after the game. "I
was excited all week." Greiner
limited Fogle to just two field goals
in 10 attempts. in the second half.

Some of the comments made by
Canisius' Larry Fogle after
Monday night's game against
Carolina were as surprising as his
sub-par performance during the
game.
Fogle, the nation's leading
scorer, averaging 34.2 points going
into the game, was held to seven
field goals on 26 attempts and
finished the game with 18 points.
Mark Greiner played Fogle man
to-man most of the game, and
obviously did a good job holding
Fogle down. However, Fogle
didn't think Greiner was all that
good.
"That mother can't play ball,"
said Fogle in reference to
Greiner's defensive play. "That
mother has no pro talent. He
fouled me everytime I came down
the court."
The 6-5 forward looked at his

six points, received a standing
ovation from the appreciative
Coliseum crowd for his defensive
job on Fogle.
Like most games, the
Gamecocks began the Canisius
game in a zone defense. But with
2:58 left in the first half, they came
out of it and moved into a man-to
man, with Greiner guarding Fogle.
Early in the game it appeared as
though Canisius would threaten
Carolina's home win streak. The
Gamecockswere able to get very
little movement in their offense
and handled the ball poorly early in
the game. In the first half Carolina
committed eight turnovers while
Canisius had only three.
And, for the second straight
game there were complaints about
the Coliseum officiating. Fogle

hands and said, "I sprained my
knuckles against Manhattan.
That's no excuse. I just had a bad
game."
Other members of the Canisius
team were outspoken too. One
player said, "Wait until we play
them at our place" and Center
Charlie Jordon complained about a
goaltending call he felt should have
been called on USC's Alex English.
Maybe Fogle was upset at
hiimself and the things he said were
riot sincere, but he has had an
attitude problem since high school,
according to several national
sports publications that have run
feature stories about him.
In high school in Detroit he
averaged 41 points a game and 29
rebounds, but because of his poor
attitude no major Michigan college
)ffered him a scholarship.
Fogle ended up at Southwestern
Louisiana where he averaged
about 15 points a game as the
team's sixth man last year. After

was on of the Canisius players
complaining about the referees.
"That was about the worst ref
job I've seen," the nation's leading
scorer said angrily. Fogle's
comments followed those of
Niagara coach Frank Layden, who
said he was tempted to pull his
team off the court during his
team's game at the Coliseum last
week because of the officiating.
However, the real turning point
of the game was a spurt in the
second half when Carolina out
scored its opponent 14-4 to break
the game open.
Carolina shot 53 per cent from
the floor while Canisius made 42
per cent of its field goal attempts.
The game's top scorers were
Alexander English, 27 points;
Fogle, 18; and Brian Winters, 16.

the NCAA slapped USL with over
100 recruting violations, the
school's basketball program was
dropped and the players were
given the green light to transfer
without penalty.
Thus, Fogle now a sophomore,
ended up at Canisius, where he
runs the show like he did in high
school.
Fogle would not concede the fact
that Greiner did a good defensive
job on him. "I think Maryland
defensed me better than anyone
else this season. I hope we play
them (USC) next year."
Greiner said after the game, "I
was excited all week about
guarding him He is a great ball
player and I have a lot of respect
for him."
Fogle claims he wants to be a
team man and scoring is not all
that important to him. Most of the
Carolina game it seemed to be the
only thing in his mind.
