Sideline View By Jim Hersh An interesting aspect of sports is the personalities of the atheletes involved, not necessarily their performance in the game itself. Take the case of Mark Greiner and Larry Fogle. Greiner, who averages about four points a game for Carolina, was assigned to guard Fogle, who leads the nation with a 34-point average, Monday night in the USC-Canisius game at the Carolina Coliseum. Greiner limited Fogle to 18 points, his lowest output of the season. In itself, that is not all that interesting, but listening to what the two players said after the game is. Fogle, who reporters found to be brash, cocky and liable to say whatever he pleases, is as undisciplined off the court as he is on it. He's simply unpredictable. The nation's leading scorer said his bruised knuckles had more to do with his below-average scoring performancethan Greiner's defense. Saying that Greiner "can't play ball," Fogle claimed "poor officiating" allowed Greiner to foul him every time he came down the court. Most players would at least give an opponent a little bit of credit for causing a sub-par performance, but not Fogle. On the other side is Greiner. After the game he stood in front of television cameras and said"yes and no sir" when the sport scaster asked him questions. He's polite, quiet and made Fogle out to be the best thing ever to put a basketball uniform on. "We just wanted to keep him from scoring 60 or 70 points like he's capable of doing," Greiner said. Fogle did score 51 points against Iona, but,capable of scoring 60 or 70 against Carolina? Greiner was just being himself, praising the opposition and taking his own praise modestly. And on the court the two players almost mirror their image off the court. Greiner is hard-working, defensive-minded-- generally the perfect team player. Meanwhile, Fogle is the gunner--shooting anytime the urge hits him, which is often. It hit him 26 times Monday night. He made seven of them. No matter which type of person you like--the over-confident, cocky type, like Fogle, or the quiet, overly-modest type, like Greiner--something caused Fogle to miss 19 shots. It must have been the sprained knuckles and the officials, not Greiner. Swimmir Upends( By Mark Leary Sports Writer Rival Clemson came to Columbia for Carolina's last home swim meet Monday and went home a tired and frustrated loser. Carolina upped its dual meet record to 5-4 on the season as they defeated an outclassed Clemson squad, 76-36. The Gamecocks will finish out their dual meet season against North Carolina at Chapel Hill Saturday. To keep Clemson closer the Gamecocks entered swimmers in different events than they had swam all season. Also, they left some of their best swimmers and divers out of their featured events. Clark Hare, a diver who has been defeated by teammates,Ray Klitzke and James Tingen all season, won both events for the Gamecocks. Also, John Poole swimming an event that he usually doesn't, the 1,000-yard freestyle, won and set a new meet record. He was awarded the Gamecock of the Meet for the win. The Gamecocks won 11 of the meet's 13 and also set five new meet records.Assistant Coach Jim Villa said of the meet, "It was a good warm-up for the big meet at North Carolina., It basically just kept our boys loose." The meet at North Carolina is a crucial one for the Gamecocks. If they win it would give the Gamecocks a respectable 6-4 record going into the post-season chamoionship meets. Villa said, McGuire Released From Hospital USC basketball coach, Frank McGuire was discharged from Baptist Hospital Wednesday morning. McGuire has been suf fering from an intestinal disorder and was hospitalized Jan. 28.
