In the United States many people
are ignorant of the problem of
prostitution, according to Dr. John
S. Wilson of the USC History
Department.
Speaking on what is a touchy and
potentially offending subject to
many people, Wilson destroyed
some of the myths concerning
prostitution that many of us think
to be true.
Using his historian background
for facts and figures, Wilson cited
the myth of the needle men as an
example. These men supposedly
injected various drugs into
women ' arms in crowded shop
ping centers and then carried off
the drugged women into captivity
as prostitutes by telling onlookers
they were her relatives who were
going to rush her to the hospital.
Wilson told his audience at the
Russell House Art Gallery Monday
Watergate.
The summer of 1973 brought
changes to the American con
sciousness. Corruption and
scandal in high places had plagued
Washington before Watergate.
This time, the presidency seemed
to b' involved. And the presence of
television cameras imposed a
conscience on the American
people, creating a citizen's jury.

Not all of the Western world is as
blind to prostitution as one might
think, according to Wilson. He told
of the American Reform
Movement (ARM) and John D.
Rockefeller both trying to show the
public that the problem, like that of
venereal disease today, must be
brought out into the open to be
dealt with efficiently.
Rockefeller and the ARM both
met with mixed success, Wilson
said, like their predecessors, the
American Purity Society and the
Englishman, William Steed.
It seems that society has always
been shocked by the white slave
trade, according to Wilson, but
when it came to action they were
stuck in a form of inertia where all
felt the job of cleaning up any
prostitution was beneath them.
Wilson's lecture was a

be of some importance, many
students have heard lectures, good
and bad, several times during the
day, and they are wary of another

All of the students at Wilson's
lecture, Yoho said, felt the talk was
excellent and that this type of thing
should be done more often, to get
problems out in the open where
they can be tackled more ef
fectively.
The next informal talk to be
given will be by Arpad Darazs of
the USC Music Department. The
subject will be Music for Everyone
and will feature members of USC's
various choirs. It will be held
Tuesday, March 12, at 8 p.m. in the
