Storey, The Chicago Times, 1861 The Jones Era The state of South Carolina has not always been a leader in reform among states in this country. Nor has it been easily susceptible to change, despite frequent national eras of social, political and educational reform. South Carolina has been hamstrung with a poor system of state government, an inferior journalistic heritage that still plagues it, an educational system that has not made the strides its counterparts have and a violent suspicion of any sort of social change. The decade of the 1960's rates as perhaps the most radical in this state since secession, slavery and war of the early 1860's or the violent reaction to in tegration that spawned anti-ethnic movements in the years that followed. During the 1960s, South Carolina saw its con servative tradition challenged by the admittance of black students to itts institutions of higher learning, both at the state and private levels. A disapproval of the national policies on busing led to the outburst in Lamar a few years later. Rising campus reaction to the Viet Nam war and the entrance of troops in Cambodia brought the University of South Carolina to the national front as a result of the spring, 1970, outbursts. Through all this, governors, national represen tatives, state house members and their moods have come and gone. But Thomas F. Jones has flowed with the ebb of a changing decade in almost every respect. Jones' decision to step down as USC president will undoubtedly mark a change in policy at the University. The rumors are going to mount con cerning the state of his health or his political am bitions. But one thing is plain: Jones has a love for this school that few administrators can match. He wants to be a teacher in the academic rather than the administrative sense. As his letter to T. Eston Marchant, chairman of the USC Board of Trustees states: "In a very real sense the purpose of my career as an educator has been set aside during my tenure as President. I am a teacher..." On many occasions, through Jones' work as president, Carolina has taken an even greater step than the state has in regard to changes at all levels of life, whether educational, social, political, etc. He has seen the advent of a great many projects, following them through to completion. A great many honors have been bestowed upon the school during Jones' tenure, and those that he has individually received have added immensely to the University's prestige. But the fact is, Jones is an educator, a point he freely admits. He is totally wrapped up in innovative education, even to the point that he has been "a little envious of the teachers and researchers charged with making these and other new ideas work." Jones is not backing out of the responsibility of running the University. Perhaps the excitement of being the school's chief executive is waning. Then again, perhaps he has reached the apex of a distinguished administrative career. In all probability, Jones truly does desire the op portunity to explore the "philosophy of the teaching learning experience." He wants to see the new trends of instructional methods through. His greatest desire is to "make available to students my years of ex perience as an educator and as a growing human being." Provided his resignation is accepted by the Board on Wednesday, Tom Jones will become a teacher on July 1. Opinions of Jones have varied during the years, but his presence has been a learning ex perience for both himself and the campus com munity; and experience tlat, despite the chaotic times, history will mark as one of this school's most valuable. Carolina has never been wh one might call a hotbed liberalism. The school w interrupted in 1970 by riots of tl sort that became contagio1 across the nation's campuse but lacks the qualities that ha, made Columbia and Kent Sta household words when it com, to overt student activity. It is really not difficult to si why. Take for example stude government elections during ti past few years. Candidati elected rarely, if ever, carriq any more than a fraction of tho students eligible to vote. There was one disap pointment.. the Band did not introduce any new material, it was more like watching them in play their greatest hits. If it is going to directly involve students, new issues have got to be found; issu related to the students; reforms that direct student participation can achieve. AWARE and other groups tha t might follow cannot afford to strike out at issues that apply only to a limited faction of the student body; the kind of issues that today's pseudo radicals just love. It has got to find meaningful reform possibilites and seek to gain them in a reasonable manner. There is a lot at stake in AWARE's resurrection on the Carolina campus. It is a movement that should be wat ched carefully by every member of the University community. But much more important, AWARE should watch itself. The group holds the future of USC activism in its hands. It would be incredibly tragic if it abused that power. I MMMMMoMMMMMM for five minutes and doesn't see it is a lie would believe that the only protection from the bubonic plague is the raising of a colony of rats in their basement. It is obvious the smoker is not only inhaling the smoke in a concentrated form when he inhales cigarettes, but is also inhaling the same "polluted" air that the non-smoker "victim" is. Now if we let A equal the amount of incidental smoke inhaled by all persons in a room where one or more persons are smoking, and if we let B equal the amount of smoke being inhaled (in particles per c.c. of air) directly from a cigarette by one smoker. Obviously the figures for A and B are positive numbers. Now anyone who has had any math at all knows if A and B are both positive numbers greater than zero that A + B is greater than A. Or simply the statement that ion-smokers in the presence of a smoker is actually getting more smoke in his lungs than the smoker, is the biggest piece of bull that has hit Columbia since the introduction of the automobile. I shall continue to smoke in class. If someone asks me to extinguish my cigarette because it bothers them I shall do so. But if someone says that the student government has banned smoking and that I can't smoke in class it will be a cold day in hell before I'll put it out.
