Swimming Team Drops Georgia BY GEORGE MORRIS Sports Writer Paced by four record-breaking performances, two of them by Tom Schmidt, the USC swimming team cruised to a 64-49 victory over Georgia Saturday at the USC pool. Schmidt swam to a pool record 4:46.4 in the 500 yard freestyle and a meet record 1:45.0 in the 200 yard freestyle. Schmidt also won the 1,000-yard freestlye. Chip Newman posted both a pool and school record with his NCAA qualifying time of 21.2 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle, and Ray Klitzke earned a score of 254.15 in the three-meter diving to set another meet record. Other winners for the Gamecocks, who won 10 of the 13 events in the meet, were Tom Jacobson, who was selected Gamecock of the Meet for his victory in the 200-yard individual medley. Klitzke won the one meter diving and Fred Ehmke won the 200-yard butterfly. Casey Claflin placed first in the 200-yard backstroke and also teamed with Clark Hamilton, Broa Hitchings, and John Poole to win the 400-yard medley relay. Although it was the (aimecock's first indoor meet of the season, several USC per formers made good individual showings Jim Schaper finished the 880-yard run in 1:51.8, qualifying him for the NCAA indoor championships in March. The infraction was the only one called all day and USC had run to a second place finish which would have collected four points to its total. As it was North Carolina that finished first in the relay, allowing them to edge USC for second place in the ieet.
