The answer to the question of
whether S. C. needs to train more
physicians is apparently yes
according to Smith.
In S. C. the following ratios
exist: 97 physicians (govern
mental and private) per 100,000
population and 85 physicians
(private and concerned with
direct patient care) per 100,000
population. This is well below
the national average of 128
physicians (private and con
cerned only with direct patient
care) per 100,000 in the U.S.
In ranking state ratios of
physicians per 100,000
population, S. C. ranks 45th out of
51 regions (50 states and the
District of Columbia.) The
American Medical Association
aims at a goal of one doctor for
every 500 people.
Even though there is a con
tinuing increase in the number of
medical students and medical
graduates of existing schools,
there is the continuing increase

to S. C. Some real estate
professionals think the Carolinas
are headed toward a Florida-like

There is also considerable
opposition to the idea of USC
building a second medical
school, but USC does not propose
to build a second medical school.
The buildings will be provided by
the VA which include the VA
Hospital, Moncrief Army
Hospital, Richland Memorial
Hospital and the William S. Hall
Psychiatric Institute.
