A majority of students com
pleting a survey concerning 24
hour open house in dorms were in
favor of the idea.
From 6,000 questionnaires
distributed by the Student Senate
Residence Life Committee, 1,000
were returned stating approval of
the plan, while 309 opposed the
idea.
Bill Kennedy, committee
chairman, said the committee is
preparing a bill to submit to the
Student Senate to propose 24-hour
visitiation on an experimental
basis in Bates West during the fall
semester.
Each apartment in the Bates
West complex would set its own
regulations, Kennedy said, and if
the experiment is successful, the
student government may decide to
propose 24-hour open house in all
dorms.
Kennedy said the survey's poor
response showed general
apathy among the students, "even
on a matter which strikes as

closely to home as visitation."
"I was very disappointed in the
results," Kennedy said. "The
thing that got me is so many people
gripe about not being able to have
visitors after a certain hour, yet
they did not take the time to an
swer the questionnaire."
The main conflict centered
around rights as adults and
questions of privacy, and the
survey showed more males
favoring the plan than females.
As to parental consent, a
majo.rity of the students said
their parents would consent to the
24-hour plan.
An appropriate number of
surveys was given to the govern
ment of each dorm, who were
responsible for distribution among
student residents, Kennedy said.
No surveys were distributed at
Sandwood Lake Apartnments or at
the old Columbia Hospital.
The highest percentage of
responses came from Bates House.
No surveys from the International
House, Baker and Preston
Woodrow were returned.
