Track Tean In Winter ! Carolina's track team has four indoor meets scheduled for its 1974 winter seasorn, which will begin Jan. 26 with a three-team meet at North Carolina. The Gamecocks, who have been. working out since September, will meet North Carolina, East Carolina and possibly North Carolina Central in its first indoor meet Jan. 26. USC had a practice meet earlier this month at Clemson against Furman and Clemson. No team score for the meet was kept, but USC coach Bill McClure said he was pleased with his team's per formance, especially in the run ning events. "We won almost every running event up there," McClure said Wednesday. "I think our strength this year will be in running events, but I also think we're going to have some good performers in the field 1208 Knox Abbott Drive, Pt lo. Strong >eason events. However, I don't think we have the depth in the field that we do in the track events." Three of USC's best races in its practice meet were run by fresh men. Bernie Allen, from Harrisburg, Pa., ran the 120-yard high hurdles in 14.0 and Dreher's Allen Shoultz ran the intermediate hurdles in 53.9. Halston Taylor, from Spring Valley, finished second in the mile, but his 4.13 time was a personal best. McClure said he was im pressed by performances by Jim Schaper, who won the mile in 4.10; Milton Reid, winner of the 100-yard dash in 9.7; and half-miler John Brown, who ran 1.55. Carolina's other winter meets will be Feb. 1 at Auburn against Auburn and with either Clemson or Georgia; the Montgomery In vitational Feb. 8. and a meet at North Carolina Feb. 16. Ten awards were presented by Coach Dick Fernald. The awards were: Most goals, John Rosier : Most points (goals and assists)? Don Belt with 23 points, 17 goals and six assists. The Coaches Award for out standing attitude and team play went to Rady Beard. The. Most Improved Player was Phil Rogers. The Gayson brothers, Larry and Paul, were given the award for having the best soccer skills. Season statistics were released. 4 The team averaged 23.6 shots per game while an average of 2.5 shots per game entered the goal. The team outahot its opponents over the season 424 to 264 and outscored them 47-42. Game winning goals were scored most frequently by Belt with six and Rosier and Rich Abernathy each had one.
