Sports Editor Carolina's man-to-man defense held Toledo to two points in the first eight minutes of the second half to allow USC to win its first basketball game of the year with relative ease 74-54 Saturday night at the Coliseum. The Gamecocks led at half 39-31, but with 12 minutes to go in the game had expanded its lead to 52 33, thanks to its defense and Toledo's inability to score. A major factor in stopping Toledo was the rebounding of USC center Bob Mathias off the defensive backboard. Mathias, 6-7, had 21 rebounds in the game, 13 in the second half alone. The majority of Mathias' rebounds were at the defensive end of the court and limited the Rocket's offensive attack to one shot every time down the court. "Mathias played better than I anticipated he would," USC Coach Frank McGuire said after the game. "If Mathias doesn't play well, we don't win. He's absolutely necessary in there right now." Mathias, a sophomore, is replacing seven-foot Danny Traylor, who graduated last year after starting for USC the past two seasons. Much of the rehnunding burden Traylor once carried is being shoved to Mathias. Rebounding Consi Sophon BY STEVE PARKER Sports Editor Sophomores Bob Mathias and Mark Greiner found themselves in the pressure-packed situation of starting their first varsity games and both came through with im pressive performances. Mathias played very strong defense, while pulling down 21 rebounds in the Gamecocks' season-opening 74-54 win over Toledo Saturday night at the Coliseum. Greiner blended in well with the Carolina fast-break of fense. scoring 10 points and gaining eight rebounds. "I expected English, Dunleavy and Winters to hold their own, but I was concerned about how well the others would play," said Coach Frank McGuire following the game. "Greiner gave us a good game and Nate Davis came in and played real well for a freshman. Along with Mathias, the two controlled the Rockets' offensive boards during the first eight minutes of the second half when USC outscored Toledo 13-2. While Mathias and Greiner took care of the defensive board, 6-8 Alexander English, another sophomore, was clearing the of fensive rebounds. Carolina did have some offensive trouble early in the game, and after six minutes trailed 12-11. However, McGuire called time-out and just seven minutes later the Gamecocks led 30-16. "Toledo was really trying to muscle English out from around the key," McGuire said. Mathias was faced with playing Toledo's 6-8 center Jim Brown and Mathias showed-up the Rocket junior. Brown outscored Mathias nine points to seven, but the USC center held a 10-rebound ad vantage over Brown's 11. "I had to block him out," Mathias said, "They told me to keep Brown off the boards and I think I did a pretty good job." Mathias' 21 rebounds compare quite favorably with the team leading average of 10.6 a year ago shared by Danny Traylor and Alexander English. "Bobby did an unbelievable job," said Mike Dunleavy. "He hit the boards, blocked shots and played great defense. It was his first great game. If he was ner vous he didn't show it." Although they didn't shoot ex ceptionally well--Winters was seven for 19; Dunleavy six for 15 the two guards got the Gamecock fast break working when Mathias, Greiner and English got defensive rebounds. Only two Toledo players gave the Gamecocks any trouble at all defensively. Reserve guard Larry Cole had 15 points to lead the Rockets and another guard, Mike Parker, had eight of Toledo's first 12 points. However, Parker, who averaged 14.2 points a game last year, scored only one other basket the entire game and ended with 10 points. Without the physical strength of a Traylor or a Tom Riker or Tom Owens, USC is very much a dif ferent style team this year than in the past. The forwards, Grener, English and reserve freshman Nate Davis, seem more intent on helping Mathias on the boards to make up for the lack of the dominating big man. First Win mitted to feeling some pre-game jitters but niether thought it was the pressure of starting their first game. "I was a little nervous before the game. 'I guess everybody was," said Greiner. Greiner showed marked im provement in one category in the opener. As a freshman last season, Greiner shot just 35 per cent from the foul line, but he made four of six Saturday night. 'I had been practicing this last week. Maybe it -paid off a little bit," Greiner said, "I made more than I usually do." McGuire took advantage of the one-sided game to get everyone from his bench into the game. The strongest reserve performance was from freshman Davis, the first man McGuire went to off his bench. Davis scored four points, gained three rebounds and blocked one shot. Carolina blocked seven Rocket shots compared to just two blocked shots by the Toledo defense.. USC's Dietzel Will Be Coach In Shrine Bowl Paul Dietzel, head football coach and athletic director at Carolina, announced to newsmen before the Carolina-Toledo game that he had received and accepted an in vitation to coach the East squad in this year's annual Shrine Bowl Classic at San Francisco Dec. 29. Dietzel has served twice previously on the coaching staff but this is his first time as head coach. He was an assistant on the staff lead by Ara Parseghian in 1966 and served on the staff of Duffy Daugherty in 1967. Dietzel said, "I arn very honored because the East-West game is the graddaddy of all the All-Star football games." Dietzel also announced that USC's offensive center Darrell Austin will ac company him to San Francisco as a member of the East sad.na
