Last Match Tie
Saves Carolina
Wrestling Win
Carolina's wrestling club won its
first match of the season Saturday
night at Furman 23-22 when the
Gamecocks won the next-to-the
last match to take the lead and
then tied the heavyweight contest
to preserve its victory.
Ike Houck pinned his opponent in
the. first period of the 190-pound
weight class to give Carolina a 21
20 lead. Prior to Houck's win,
Furman had taken victories in the
150, 158, 167 and 177 pound weight
classes.
Ray Lewis, Nick Leventis and
Bill Buddin had individual wins for
the Gamecocks, in addition to
Houck.
Heavyweight Lee Baker, in the
most exciting match of the night,
battled his opponent to a 5-5 tie to
save the Carolina win.
Leventtis pinned his man in the
134-pound class to give Carolina a
2-0 lead after the first match.
Meanwhile, Buddin pinned his
opponent in the second period.
Buddin's pin gave the Gamecocks
a 15-8. However, Furman won the
next four matches to take the lead.
That set the stage for Houck's
pin which put the Gamecocks back
in the lead.
Carolina's next wrestling match
will be Dec. 14 when it travels to
The Citadel for a match.
