Grantz Out;

Ron Bass has been handed the
assignment of running Carolina's
team against a North Carolina
State team that has the potential to
run, quite literally, any opponent
off the field.
Freshman Bass replaces the
injured Jeff Grantz as Carolina's
starting quarterback and while he
will never actually confront State's
potent running backs on the field, it
will be his duty to attempt tc
outscore them.
Every indication by Coach Paul
Dietzel was. that Grantz would
definitely be unable to play. "The
doctors said 'you can forget about
him for Saturday,' " Dietzel said
Tuesday.
Last season State prevailed over
USC 42-24 with running backs Stan
Fritts, Willie Burden and Charley
Young compiling 293 yards bet
ween them. Normally it would be
easy for Carolina's defensive corp
to forget that and- pass it off as
"last year's" but in this case USC's
defenders can't honestly forget it.

halfback Burden is rushing at an

halfback Roland Hooks is gaining
.5.1 yards a try.
The challenge is definitely
present for Carolina's defense,
because State has a potentially
dangerous passing attack with
quarterbacks Bruce Shaw and
Dave Buckey at the helm.
USC's attempts to stop State will
be even more difficult as the list of
disabled players on the Carolina
defense continues to grow. Dietzel
warns that the Gamecocks may be
"running out of bodies" on defense.
Bass finds himself directing the
USC offense midway through his
freshman season after playing only
five downs on the varsity
Those plays were in the Ohio
University game during the closing
stages and Bass did impress with
two carries for ten yards.
On the junior varsity level- Bass
was extremely successful, leading
the team in total offense, rushing
and passing yardage, touchdowns
and scoring. And that is without
the benefit of playing in the last JV
game, because Bass was promoted
to backup to Grantz the week
before.
But it remains to be seen if Bass
can produce on.the varsity level.
To Bass's credit he has worked
with the veer offense for several
years now, having directed it
throughout high school.
USC's outstanding regular
quarterback, Grantz, sustained
ligament damage to his left leg
very early during the LSU game

week of practices.
Grantz directed USC to a near
upset of LSU last weekend and it is
generally thought that USC will not
hav'e to play quite as well as they
did against LSU to beat State. USC
came within four points of LSU,
which is 7-0 and ranked seventh in
the nation. N.C. State is not ranked
umong the top twenty.

offense.
State was nationally ranked in
the early part of the season but
consecutive losses to Nebraska and
Georgia dropped State out of the
elite grouping. State is 5-2, but the
Wolfpack is 4-0 in ACC contests
with victories over the ACC
powers, Maryland and North
Carolina.
USC is 4-3, with all three of the
Carolina losses coming to teams
ranked in the top twenty. Houston,
Miami of Ohio and LSU, with
combined records of 20-1, beat the
Gamecocks by a mere 14 points
combined.
State is not quite in the class of
these national powers and if the
Gamecocks can deiat the Wolf
pack they could be of to a bowl bid.
