"The Madwoman of
Chaillot," a 1943 comedy
fantasy oy Jean Giraudoux
about a woman's deter
mination to thwart an apparent
plot to destroy Paris, will be
the second production of the
USC Theatre Nov. 7-10.
The play will be performed
each evening at 8:15 p.m. in
USC's Drayton Hall on Sum
ter and College Streets, with a
$1 admission charge for
students, faculty and staff.
- Countess Aurelie, one of
many interesting visitors to the
sidewalk Cafe Chez Francis, is
known to the pentle of the
district as the "Madwoman
of Chaillot" because ot ner
daily cafe visits in which she
collects scraps and bones for
the animals of the area and
infusing the cafe clientele with
her "joie de vivre."
The countess accidently
discovers on one such visit a
dreadful plot by a group of
profiteers who are schemiig -to
blow up Paris in order to obtain
the oil they think is un
derground.

The countess enlists the aid
of her friends and im
mediately sets into motion a
bizarre- but imaginative
scheme to save Paris and quite
possibly the world.
Among those who come to
her aid are some of the most
colorful characters of the
modern stage: the ragpicker,
a poetic vagabond convinced
that the - earth
has been invaded by another
planet; Constance with her
imaginary dog, Dickie;
Garbrielle, who never acts
without- first consulting the
voices dwelling in her hot
water bottle; and Josephine,
an expert in all matters of law,
who daily waits to see
President Wilson, though he's
been dead since 1924.
Susan-Lynn Johns, a
graduate -theatre student from
Charleston, is Countess
Aurelie, the Madwoman of
Chaillot in the 22-member cast
