To the Editor:
Having -read Doug William's
article, "Clarkson Brings Action
Against USC Board", I can un
derstand what was meant when
someone had told me that the
"Gamecock" was a "toy
newspaper". At the time of the
conversation I replied, in this
moment of my naivety, that what
he said was most undoubtedly false
because I had been assured many
times that the USC Department of
Journalism was one of the best in
the South and would not publish a
trashy paper. For this reason I
failed to see how a student could
claim "The Gamecock" to be a toy
newspaper.
Now that I have read the front
page article by Doug Williams in
depth, what the person had told me
has been proven correct without
debate. It has given me a new
insight into the whole scheme of
things here at USC-Playworld
USA. We are most blessed with a
play radio-station, play hospital,
play police force and now with the
inception of Mr. Clarkson upon the
scene it is evident that we now
have a student who is playing the
role of a crusading lawyer. How
incredibly similar this'situation is
to Plasticville, USA on a Lionel
Train village. The list is seemingly
endless, a play government, play
church, play post office.............

To The Editor
Due to regulations of the dor
mitories students are not allowed
to cook in their rooms; due to the
transportation problem in the city
students almost have to eat on
campus. This leaves the University
Dining Services to be the only
alternative. As most of the
students here at USC know this is
not much of an alternative. The
purpose of our letter is to bring this
fact to the attention of the few who
can improve the dining services on
campus. We are not only going to
direct our attention to the taste of
the food, (WHICH IS TERRIBLE ),
but also the service and the prices.
For those of you who do not .know
it is quite common to see someone
leave hungry with food left on their
plate.

This scene, if at breakfast could be
due to the watery scrambled eggs,
the burned left over hard toast if
there is any toast, and-or the
waffles and syrup, (SUGAR AND
WATER), which are almost
uneatable. We could go on and on
about how bad the food is but it is
quite obvious to anyone who has
eaten there.
The main problem with the
service is the location of the grill in
the center of the serving line.
Anyone waiting for a hamburger or
an omelet causes the rest of the
people to be held up and it also
causes chaos in the center of the
serving line. We think that if the
Dining Service would hire some
cashiers who could add, the
students might know the price of
their breakfast from one morning
to the next. Maybe if the students
are lucky the Dining Service will
aquire a manager interested in the
cafeteria and not in drinking coffee
like the approximately thirty five
they now have employed.
Maybe this slack - managerial
system is the cause of such high
prices charged by the Dining
Service. It seems that the
University Dining Services should
be able to beat the prices of a
privately owned restaurant and the
quality of the food at that price, but
is seems exactly opposite. We are
tired of the ice cream scoop way of
measuring eggs and if this is the
size of one scrambled egg we would
like to know the type of eggs they
are using (chicken or quail).
University students, save the
Frats, are known to be a group of
low economic level, how does the
University Dining Service get
away with their exorbitant prices.
We suggest they employ a system
of a basic price per meal. $1.00 for
breakfast and 1.50 for lunch and
supper seems reasonable. We
have seen this system work on
other campuses and would like to
see it put into effect on this one.
It is evident that A.R.A.
(Automatic Retailers of America)
is not doing the best job possible.
Since students are the ones af
fected by their job we should see to
it that their standards are im
proved and and maybe even go so
far as to get rid of A.R.A. A boycott
would be detrimental to the
University Dining Service and
