Georgia Tech comes into the contest with an undefeated record and a 13-game winning streak. Last Wednesday Georgia Southern, one of the powers in the south on the varsity water polo level, came to town and brought with them five All-Americas on.a seven man starting team. The Carolina water polo team pulled the upset of the young season as they defeated Southern in overtime 14-11. The win enabled Carolina to keep their record of nev er being defeated in their own pool. - After showing against Southern these water polo players deserve to be in the limelight. The players, described by their coach Ed Miller as "aggressive and hungry to win," deserve to have the crowds of a basketball or football game, but they never will and they know it. This is what gives this sport its flare and makes it so interesting the players know they will never have large crowds but they still give 100 per cent. With less than a minute left in regulation time, Southern knotted the score at nine. Carolina had one chance to score but they were stopped. Scores for Carolina came from Tom Schmidt and Nick Kesslering. So Carolina went into the final period with a one-point edge and a very inspired team. Casey Claflin, usually a defensive specialist, was great in this all important period as he scored two crucial goals that insured Carolina's upset victory. Kesslering added one more score which made the final 14-11. Water polo is a deceiving sport and the first-time viewer has to watch closely to see the intricies of this sport. Water polo is, sur prisingly, quite rough and many strategies go into the game. The roughness is a factor which the average person would not think existed. It is hard to believe that there is time for roughness in this game, when the players are devoting most of their time and energies to swimming up and down the pool. But the roughness is an ever present factor and adds ex citement to the game. In the Southern game a Carolina player that was in scoring position was dunked and at the same time elbowed, Apparently dirty, but part of the game. The strategic part of the game is possibly one of its most interesting aspects. The teams set up zone defenses, have fast break plays and even pass until they set up the best shot.
