Mock
Disaster
Planned
A bomb will rip through the
Russell House at noon on Thursday'
leaving more than 300 students
seriously injured.
This mock disaster, planned by
the Richland County-City of
Columbia Civil Defense Office will
be executed to test the mass
emergency capabilities of the
area's eight hospitals. In addition,
another 100 students, considered
friends and family of the disaster
victims, will be treated for trauma
and hysteria by emergency teams
from the Columbia Mental Health
Center.
Coordinated through Student
Government Association, the
disaster will require 305 students
who will be tagged to indicate
each's injury -- ranging from
fractures to burns and coronaries.
Emergency medical treatment
facilities housed in a trailer will be
dispatched to the Russell House
area with doctors and nurses from
the city expected to arrive on the
scene to administer first aid. Also
involved are the members of the
National Guard, Campus Police,
City Police and City Fire Depart
ments. The injured students will
be transported in automobiles to
the emergency rooms of Richland
Memorial, Lexington County,
Baptist, Moncreif Army, Veterans
Administration, S.C. State, and
Providence Hospitals and to Craft
Farrow. Because the Student
Health Center should be damaged
in the explosion, its facilities are
not planned for utilization.
The Russell House is the first on
location disaster site since
Exercise Carolina was initiated
four years ago to help hospitals
maintain accreditation.
Students will not be barred from
