Carolina's cross country team
finished third in the State In
tercollegiate Championship Meet
Saturday morning at Furman and
freshman Halston Taylor was
second individually in the meet for
the Gamecocks.
Furman, with 47 points, won the
meet. Baptist College was second
with 48 and USC had 51 points.
Clemson, 84 points, and The
Citadel, 114, were the other teams
in the meet.
Carolina did without their top
runner, Jim Schaper, who is suf
fering from a bad back. Schaper
started the 5.2-mile course but
dropped out after two miles.
Baptist's Tony Atwell was the
meet's top individual, finishing the
course in 25:31.8. Taylor's time
was 26:01.
"I thought our team had a pretty
good effort without a top runner,"
USC coach Bill McClure said
Sunday. "It hurts our overall team
effort without him running.
"With him I think we could have
won the meet," McClure said.
"There were only four points
seperating the first three teams
and we were lacking our number
one man."
USC's other top finishers were
Rod Dalton, eighth,Rob Day, ninth,
Gary Hill, 14, and Wayne Thomas,
18.
The team's next meet will be the
NCAA Regional meet at Furman
Nov. 10. McClure said Taylor,
Dalton, Day, Thomas and Hill will
probably run in that meet.
