A Basic Educationa Opportunity
Grant (BEOG) Program to
provide financial aid to freshmen
is now in effect at USC, according
to R.B. Jeter, director of the
Financial Aids Department.
The new BEOG program is
designed to provide financial
assistance tofincoming freshmen,
paying up to one-half of their eiltire
college cost. The grant is based on
the student's financial need. The
amount of the grant is based on
the student's family contribution
which is a set percentage of the
family's income, the amount of
funds available- for the program
and the cost of the student's
education since the grant may not
exceed one-half of the cost.
The maximum award that could
be recieved under this program is
$1400 per year minus the family
contribution. For the 1973-74
academic year the maximum
award available is only $452 due to
the current lack of federal' ap
propriations for the BEOG
program. The minimum grant

Freshman entering USC for the
first time on a full-time basis
during the 1973-74 academic year
are eligible for consideration for
the grant.
Students must be U.S. citizens or
in the United States permanently
with intentions of becoming
residents. This includes present
freshmen at the university as well
as incoming freshmen.
The BEOG program is designed
for freshmen only this year. This is
due to Congress' only approving
enough money for freshmen
financial assistance. There is a
possibility tle program could be
open to sophomoreslif federal ap
proprioations were increased to
cover all freshmen assistance with
an additional increase to cover
sophomores.
Present and incoming freshmen
in need of financial assistance for
post-high school education in
terested in the BEOG program can
pick up a grant application at the
financial aid office in the Pen
dleton Building. Deadline for
application is Feb. 1, 1974.

Rita McKinr *y, student body
president, ga a a. statement
Wednesday . concerning "un
fortunate inferences drawn by
some students, faculty and staff
from the Homecoming article in
Monday's Gamecock."
Members of the Association of
Afro-American students met with
McKinney and Bob Craft of the
Gamecock staff Tuesday. The
point of protest for the Afro
representatives and Homecoming
Queen Gail Ransom was that there
was no clarification of' why
McKinney had refused, prior to
ceremonies in Williams-Brice
Stadium, to hand the sceptre to the
new queen.
Traditionally student body
presidents have performed this
function during the festivities.
McKinney said in the statement
her decision not to participate in
the crowning "revolved around the
planning events leading up to the
Homecoming program in relation
to the alumni office.. and had
nothing to do with who the queen
would be."
Further, she said, "The student
coordinators of Homecoming felt

that Homecoming does not take the
interest3 of the student body into
account. This was explained to the
alumni office as the student
coordinators asked the alumni
office for financial support for
activities which they felt would
make Homecoming - more
meaningful and enjoyable for the
student body. The alumni office
responded with a token $100
donation.
"Because of their apparent lack
of interest in making the event
more relevent to the current
student body, I felt my presence on
the field at halftime would have
indicated support that I did not feel
for the alumni office."
Concluding the statement by
saying she hoped "the selections of
a black Homecoming Queen this
year and a married Homecoming
Queen last year reflect the current
thinking of the students,"
McKinney congratulated Ransom
on being the choice of the students
and reiterated that her absenc e
from the field last Saturday night
was "in no way a reflection on her
as a black student or as a
Homecoming Queen."
