were especially gAlling, as though
they were grand duchesses
slumming in the artisan section of
London.
Geoff Darling, Betty Woodruff
and I were sitting in the Golden
Spur that Thursday evening before
Homecoming Week, talkingand
wasting time pleasantly before
closing. Tom came rushing in, he
had been in the darkroom all af
ternoon and evening. "I can't take
it any more," he said. "Those
Homecoming Queen candidates
and their boyfriends in the
darkroom, arrrgh." He sat down
for a few minutes until he had to go
back and grab some prints out of
the wash.
Chuck Cromer was worried.
Worry is a state that Chuck never
really escapes from. -He had just
survived the headaches and
hassles of dealing with Joe Walsh's
managers, a group of blood leeches
who had left Chuck debilitated.
No time for rest, though. The
New Riders concert was upon him
and he had to rush around and
check all the underpinnings and
hope that there would be a good
turn out. If there wasn't, the
Contemporarty Sounds committee
was in trouble. Tickets weren't
going well and Chuck was starting
to worry.
Brian Kierce was a lot less vocal.
The chief engineer of WUSC-AM
had arranged the technical side of
Cockfest for the three years that it
has been in existence. Sometimes,
Brian would stay up as long as 36
hours at a stretch, carefully and
precisely editing the tapes for the
skits, sitting in Studio C of WUSC
while the air conditioner kept the
temperature at about 60 degrees.
He had two years under his belt
this time and things went
smoother.
Alan Rosenblum pulled out. He
told Millory Merchant that he
didn't have time to help with
Homecoming. He said that he
should have pulled out earlier, but
that he had tried to stay and help
the Homecoming Committee as
long as he could. He said that there

were a lot of people trying tiara,
but "they couldn't get it together."
You couldn't miss them. The
candidates' pictures were
plastered all over the wall just
inside the ramp entrance to
Russell House. I had gone to the
third floor by the elevator and had
not seen them. Tom said that he
wanted to take a look at the ones he
had done to see how they stacked
up against the others. So we went
down and looked. His work out
shone all the rest there. Contrast,
focus, compositon, his pictures had
it all. He didn't vote, though.
The long lines were gone by the
time I got to the Coliseum in the
late afternoon. The woman at the
desk said, "I can only give you a
single, that's all I have." I told her
that was fine and she handed me a
yellow ticket with a red rooster on
it and punched my fee card.
It was a lousy seat, Section 52,
Row 19, Seat 13. In the end zone.
But it was noteworthy. It was the
first football ticket I had picked up
in four and half years of at
tendance at USC.
I decided to go to Cockfest. It
was my last time around, one way
or the other and I wanted to see
what Brian had spent so much time
on. Jim Elliot was there, down
from Greensboro. He was testing
some new speaker cabinets. Great
bass response as Shawn Phillips
showered the incoming crowd
which would number about 3,000.
The various fraternities and
sororities clustered themselves so
that they could scream when their
organization was mentioned.
It was corny, pure collegiate rah
rah cron. Bob Fulton and Dave
Wright put each other down, the
band did the fight song and Mrs.
Garnet and Black coyly pulled out
the winning numbers for an
autographed football and a
hanging valise. Dietzel couldn't be
there, but everyone came to their
feet cheering when Frank McGuire
came out.
McGuire bolstered the collective
school spirit with an understated
pep talk and surprisingly admitted

that the aisketball team "Would
have to hustle"to win this season.
Then he took his turn at the
squirrel cage and drew the winning
name for a trip to Montreal.
The skits weren't bad, con
sidering where they were and the
theme that their writers had to
work with. "Once Upon A Time
In Carolina," or having the skits
based on Fairy Tales.
Zeta Tau Alpha's skit was based
on the Wizard of Oz and some guy
down front evidently knew the girl
playing Dorothy and kept yelling
out "Yay, Zeta!" at the top of his
lungs, embarrassing the poor girl
to death.
The fellow sitting beside the
screamer tried to place his hands
over his mouth but it did not good.
"Yay, Zeta!" continued to pour
out. Good clean fun.
Cockfest was just that and a lot
of credit for its success goes to
Brian Kierce, who pulled it
together magnificently.
I missed New Riders, choosing
instead to go out to Pine Island for
the College of Journalism's
Homecoming bash and more
coincidentally, birthday party for
the College's dean, Dr. A.T.
Scroggins.
The Student Government has
made no secret of its desire to have
Green St. closed and so the
giggling being heard lately was
over the prospect that it would be
closed during Saturday morning
and afternoon.
I parked my car at the metered
lot just off the remains of Sumter
Street. The promises were great
flower sales, a band in the middle
of the street, free drinks, a regular
carnival!
I got out of the car and walked up
the middle line of Green Street.
Gary Cooper in a red crewneck
sweater. Then I began noticing
that the people on the sidewalk
were giving me sidelong glances as
though I was doing something
totally outrageous. The street is
closed! Look, you can do it.
It was no better when I got to
Russell House. There were people

sitting in the street in front of the
flatbed truck that supported the
band, but the majority of people
were on either side of the street.
When someone crossed the street,
-they crossed at the crosswalks and
I saw several of them look both
ways before crossing. Old habits
are hard to break.
The Student Government was
selling T-shirts as though there
was no tomorrow and the band
dragged on. The prevailing mood
was one- of unrelenting boredom.
The Union, crack planners that
they are, ran out of flowers and had
to shut up their booth.
There was a cafe-type thing set
up near the entrance to the Russell
House parking lot. The sign said
"Sit Down. We Will Serve You."
But there was no one to serve. A
Chinese sat behind a table which
help some oriental delicacy. Very
carefully he picked out a fly with a
pair of chop sticks. Frisbees had
started flying by this time. A few
of the people had gotten into the
spirit by an hour before the street
was to open.
Here and there an occasional
alumnus and his family strolled
through. One such unit was
especially amusing, the woman
spitting fire from her eyes, seeing
and condemning alt, especially
attractive coeds.
The day lurched along in such a
fashion until it was time for the big
game. Living about 10 blocks from
the stadium, I decided to hoof it.
I made it there in 13 minutes, far
less time than many of the
Cadillacs and Thunderbirds J
passed along the way. The State
Fair was all lit up, like a tacky and
gaudy Christmas tree. The High
way Patrolmen, their bellies over
their belts, commanded the
situation with one hand in the air
and one hand on'a flashlight.
The stream caught me up and I
was anonymous, snapping back
into focus when I saw something
amusing. "Full Scholarship
Donor," the tab inbedded in the
asphalt said.
The bar's open. I could see
through the windshield of the
camper as the smiling man poured
some more amber colored liquid
into the matron's plastic highball
glass.
The scene was repeated several
times as I passed the campers on
the asphalt in the shadow of the
Cockpit. I thought they were a little
sad and thought perhaps that's

I walked across the tracks to the
student's side. It was a lot darker
over there and I was nearly run
down by a full scholarship donor as
he barrellassed his Buick across
the asphalt, determined to show his
masculinity and not miss the kick
off.
I glared at him, but one ca;mot
get through to stupid men, I was
caught in another flow. Students
all dressed up in clothes that could
have been found in Gentlemen's
Quarterly or Glamour two years
ago.
Some of the women had on those
flowers known as Homecoming
Mums, the ugliest concoction since
the orchid wrist corsage. It was
amusing and sad to see them dp
some of the women, the mum
making the only curve that the
woman had.
I saw several people that I knew
and I had the oddest sensation of
being caught somewhere where I
shouldn't be. I took my seat and
soon became aware of the only two
smells in the air. One was bourbon
and the other was roasted peanuts.
Strange.
"Hey, could somebody shut
Bryant Wright up?" Never having
attended a football or, for that
matter, basketball game, I had
never seen the cheerleaders in
action before.
Bryant was at the far end of the
stadium from me, but he had a
microphone that blasted to the
whole section. People yelled rude
things at him but Bryant was at the
other end and could not have heard
them. .
The head cheerleader was all
spiffy in what tooxed to be a
crimson crushed velvet dinner
jacket, something I haven't seen
since my last high school prom.
Bryant was having problems.
The crowd was bored. They
wouldn't cheer or anything and
Bryant was clearly a drowning
man. "Now come on, people. Show
a litttl spirit. I know you,aren't.
real excited." Bryant cajoled,
reprimanded and scolded and still
the crowd remained on their duffs
and out of reach.
However, Bryant's thin tenor
voice is not exactly enough to make
one want to burn the stadi6m down
