Aer a disheartening loss in
the championship game of
their own tournament to NC
State ending of their 37-game
home winning streak this road
trip is a very important one.
USC's visit to Raleigh last
season found the ruggers
losing a disputed game to State
for USC's only loss of the
spring season. Carolina was
11-1-1 for the spring.,
Duke University by no
means carries the importance
of the State game but this will
not be an easy match for the
Carolina ruggers. Last year
Carolina edged Duke barely, at
Duke, as Carolina won a 9-6
decision.

Captain of the Carolina
ruggers Ed Hughes said after
the loss to State last week,
"The mark of a good team is
whether they can come back or
not." He added, "The game
next week will show what kind
of team Carolina really is."
An interesting note on the
game against State is that
Carolina has never defeated
State on their home field. The
Carolina Ruggers record as of
now is 5 -2 and things will be
looking up for them if they can
come home with these two big

Dietzel hinted. that Ohio is
relatively weak. "These people
you are supposed to beat are the
ones that give you the most
trouble, " Dietzel said. "The
difficult teams to prepare for are
the ones that, on paper, you should
beat.
"You have no problems getting
ready to play the big teams,".
Dietzel continued. "Your team
will prepare itself for those games.
You don't even have to say
anything to them."
But Ohio is definitely not a big
team, and Dietzel is well aware of
the fact. "This game promises to
be another very difficult game to
prepare for. Ohio University is like
VPI and Wake Forest in that they
are all very hard teams to prepare
for," Dietzel said.
Dietzel's extensive worries about
preparation appear unfounded in
light of the fact that his Gamecocks
defeated both VPI and Wake on the
road. But then again, the
manner in which the Gamecocks
defeated both schools would make
any coach worry.
USC squeaked by VPI, which
now sports an 0-6 record, by the
narrow margin of 27-24. Wake fell
easier, 28-12, but the 1-4 Demon
Deacons had pulled within eight
points of Carolina midway in the
final quarter.
Ohio's lone victory on the season
was over Northwestern. But that
upset win is overshadowed by
lopsided losses to Kent State (35-7)
and Toledo (35-8). USC and Ohio
dad one common opponent, Miami
)f Ohio, and both schools lost to the
Redskins by less than a touchdown.
Next week football actually
returns to Carolina in the peron of
[LSU. Perhaps the fans will also.
