Art Assistant
Exhibits Photos.
In Smithsonian
Judith Steinhauser, a teaching
assistant in the University of South
Carolina Department of Art, is an
exhibitor in "New Images 1839
1973," the first in a series of shows
in the print gallery of the
Smithsonian Institution's new Hall
of Photography.
The show reviews the spirited
revival by contemporary
photographers of historic
photographic processes, such as
daguerreotypes, tintypes and gum
bichromates, the latter which
Steinhauser treats with a modern,
avant-garde aesthetic sense. The
show will continue through Jan. 20,
1974, in the Hall of Photography,
third floor of the National Museum
of History and Technology in
Washington, D.C.
Steinhauser teaches fun
damental design and photography
courses at USC. She was awarded
a 1973 National Endowment for the
Arts fellowship to conduct original
research into two little-known 19th
century photographic processes
chromotype and lead print, for use
in print-making. She holds a B. S.
degree in art education from the
State University of New York at
Buffalo and a master's in
photography from the Illinois
Institute of Technology in Chicago.
She formerly was an assistant
professor of photography at the
Rochester Institute of Technology.
