Carolina will face Atlantic
Coast football weakling
Saturday night when they
play Wake Forest in Winston
Salem.
The Gamecocks are 2-2 after
beating Virginia Tech last
Saturday. Wake Forest, 1-3,
has lost to William and Mary,
Richmond and Texas in con
secutive weeks after beating
Florida State in the season
opener.
Carolina Head Coach Paul
Dietzel is expected to be able to
coach this week after missing
last Saturday's game because
of a stomach ailment. Dietzel
was released from Baptist
Hospital Tuesday and doctors
told him he could work himself
back into his coaching routine.
Pride Ratterree, who was
the head coach last week, will
again coach if Dietzel suffers a
relapse before the game and
cannot coach.
In their four games Wake's

offense has not scored a touch
down. Richmond and Texas
both beat the Deacons 41-0,
William and Mary won 15-14
and the Deacons had three
field goals in their 9-7 win over
Florida State.
Wake's defense scored two
touchdowns in the William and
Mary game. Felix Glasco,
their monster man on defense,
ran an interception and fumble
for touchdowns.
The Deacons biggest of
fensive threat is kicker Chuck
Ramsey. His three field goals
beat Florida State and he is
fourth in the nation in punting.
His four-game punting average
is 46.1 and last Saturday at
Texas he punted for a 51.6
average.
Fullback Frank Harsh is
considered the Deacon's
running back. Although he
missed the Texas game with an
injury, he has rushed for 164
yards on 32 carries, a 5.1
average, in three games. The
other running back, Clayton
Heath has gained 180 yards in
56 carries.

Quarterback Andy Carlton
has completed less than 33 per
cent of his pass attempts,
which is an indication of just
how poor the Deacon's offense
is.
Yet, as weak as Wake's
offense is, Carolina's coaches
said this week they are con
cerned about Wake Forest.
"Nobody has moved the ball
on the long play against their
defense," Assistant Coach
Oval Jaynes said Tuesday.
Apparently Richmond and
Texas used a lot of little plays
to score 41 points each against
Wake.
Carolina's offense controlled
the ball .last week against
Virginia Tech, proving they
can win without long touch
down plays.
So far this season, quar
terback Jeff Grantz has run for
234 yards and passed for 461
yards on 36 completions in 66
attempts. The running backs
are, Jay Lynn Hodgin-227
yards, 3.6 average-and Randy
Spinks-101 yards, 4.2 average.

Frank Harsh sat in Lane Stadium
last Saturday afternoon watching
Carolina beat Virginia Tech while
his Wake Forest teammates were
in Austin, Texas losing to the
University of Texas 41-0.
Plaqued by injuries all year,
Harsh is the starting fullback for
the Deacons and was forced to
miss the Texas game with a torn
cartilage in his ribs. Harsh forsees
a "real close" game this Saturday
night at Groves Stadium in- Win
ston-Salem.
Harsh, from Blairsville, Pa.,
gained a starting role as a fresh
man last year, rushing for 670
yards. In three games this season
he has rushed for 164 yards in 32
carries for a 5.1 average. The 6-0,
210, fullback said he is used
primarily as a blocker but suspects
he will be running the ball a lot this
Saturday night for two reasons:

the Deacons will run more and his
injuries have healed.
"South Carolina is a tough
team," said Harsh. "Coach Paul
Dietzel does a great job with the
guys. I was impressed with Dana
Carpenter on defense. Last year I
had to block him because the
middle linebacker was my man,
but they have changed him to
defensive tackle and now I have to
worry about Garry Mott.
"South Carolina runs the veer
perfect," said Harsh." Jeff Grantz,
Jay Lynn Hodgin, and Randy
Spinks are something else."
Wake Forest's offense has not
scored a touchdown all year. "We
have not scored because of
mistakes," said Harsh. "We have
moved the ball well but once we get
inside the 20, penalties or fumbles
always kill us."
