SAC Vs.
Athletics:
Long Fight
A game of political football is
rapidly developing between the
Student Allocations Com
mission- and the Athletic
Department.
The game began last sprinj
when the SAC told soccei
coach Richard Fernald thai
they would no longer fun(
clubs succh as the soccer team
who play intercollegiatly witi
teams funded by their owr
athletic departments.
Fernald said he got a lette1
on Jan. 29 from Harold "Bo
Hagan, assistant athleti4
director, saying the athleti4
department would make i
study of club sports and theii
relation to varsity athletics
but by last April's meeting
Fernald said he still had'no
received a reply form thi
athletic department.
The SAC so far this year ha
stuck to their fundit
guidelines. - At the meetin
Thursday night, SAC ap

Congress. As with ,the

mission still insists that the
bowlers' funding come from
the athletic department.
SAC has asked the
Board or Trustees to define the
funding situation, but the
decision has not been made
One solution, proposing that
the student government
t control the funding has also
met with silence from the
board.
The commission did approve
the Spanish Club budget for
the coming year, and a sub-.
committee is busy working on
a set of formalized guidelines,
but it may be a long cold winter
for the various club sports

the trustees as to their future

"I hate foreign languages and I
:an't believe I'm enjoying this
spanish!" is one of many favorable
:omments about an innovative
eaching method in the Univers*ty
>f South Carolina Department of
Foreign Languages and
Literatures.
Called "self-pacing," the
program began last year with 254
3panish students and was so
successful that it has been ex
panded this year to include Ger
rnan, French, and a part of first
year Italian.
Dr. George M. Reeves, head of
the Department of Foreign
Languages, explains that the self
pacing method of teaching is
relatively new at the university
level in foreign languages, and
that, "we may be the only
university in the country offering
as many as four different
languages in self-pacing." He
gave credit for initiating the
program to Dr. Bruce Fryer and
Dr. Peggy Hartley who planned
and developed the pioneer project
in Spanish.
Altogether, some 700 of the 3,500
foreign language enrolled students
are studying under the method.
The student meets with the in
structor at least once a week and
proceeds at his chosen pace to
master sequential blocks of
material and to take tests on the
material when he feels he is ready.
He must master one block before
moving to the next. A regular
textbook and workbook are used,

Dr. Reeves points out that the t
program has a number of ad- <

one year*of work in one semester.
On the other hand, the program
appeals to the slower student who
feels he needs more time than
average. If he doesn't finish the
work in one semester, he can
continue into the next semester
without receiving a failing grade.
Or if a stuaent in a traditional
course gets behind, he can switch
from that to a self-pacing section in
the same semester, rather than
drop the course."

net the challenge of having to

Dr. Reeves explains a number of
ther new developments in the
lepartment besides the self-pacing
nethod: "We are offering the
raduate reading course in French
nd Spanish on an individualized
iasis. Also, we are considering
ew couses in some of the so-called
ritical languages, such as Arabic,
apanese, and Swahili. With new
riethods of individualized in
truction, it has become
conomically feasible to teach a
mall number of highly-motivated
tudents in such languages, and we
ope to meet the needs as they
rise."
Reeves emphasized that the
lepartment "takes a very open
ittitude toward those interested in
anguage study. We are not so
!oncerned about a person's
>ackground as with his motivation
o learn."
