THE ACTION was necessary
because in December of last
year - USC joined the
Association for Intercollegiate
Athletics for Women, (AIAW).
One of the regulations of the
AIAW state one person must
have the responsibility tc

(SAC), which administers the
distribution of the student
activity fee, would no'longer
fund women's sports and other
athletic activities not spon
sored by the athletic depart
ment.
In a letter to Jones, Dietzel
and the heads of business and
student affairs, Scott Derks,
then SAC chairman, said, "The
commission wishes to
express its disapproval of this
policy of no athletic depart
ment assistance for those
teams which are clearly
operating on an intercollegiate
level nut happen to be com

in sports not presently en
dorsed by the athletic
department."
THE ISSUE was further
complicated early last month
when the Faculty Senate, after
months of study, passed the
SAC's recommendation which
granted jurisdiction of ad
ministration of the $12.50
student athletic fee to the SAC
and thus require Dietzel to
appear before the Commission
for yearly funding. In the past
the athletic fee was 'in the sole
control of Dietzel ..,in ef
fect, no supervision.
