McGuire coached Cham

season at Philadelphia, a year
which saw Wilt average 50.4
points a game, including 100 in
one game.
e "He was a scorer on our
team,,' said McGuire. "He had

told Wilt, "You have score 50
points a game for us to win."
McGuire commented on the
game in which Chamberlain
scored 100 points.
"The Knicks said he was
slow, so I used this to motivate
him. There were 11 people
chasing him that night, five on
their team, four on ours, and
two referees.

"There were only eight
teams in the league then,"
McGuire said. "There weren't
any weak sisters then. Today
they have those expansion -
teams."
McGuire said Chamberlain
also scored 78 points in another
game against Los
Angeles that season. "And
don't forget the other teams go
out to stop Chamberlain," he
said.

met Wilt after becoming
coach, Chamberlain was seven
minutes late for a meeting.
"He showed me the key and,
explained he was assigned the
wrong room key."
"I have a contract and you
have one too," McGuire said he
told Chamberlain. "I'll never
beat you and you'll never beat
me, but together we can beat
Boston.
"He stood up, shook my hand
and said, "Coach, but we'll
never beat Boston.
"He gave out for me the
entire year and we came
within two points of knocking
off Boston," said McGuire.
"In the playoffs, we should
have beaten Boston." he said.
"After the game Wilt came
over and he said 'Coach, I
know we can beat Boston.'
"Boston had a better team
than us," said McGuire. "If
he(Chamberlain) had played
for Boston, they'd never lose."
McGuire said that a
professional coach must be
able to psych his team up night
after night.
"You don't coach the team,"

he said. "You tell stories,
you've got to be thinking.
You've gone 1,000 miles one
way and just lost a game to
Boston by one point, and you're
playing in Los Angeles tonight.
you're responsible for making
the guys do things, to put out
more."
McGuire recalled one tough
game in which he had to get a
player up. "We were in Boston
and oneof our guys made a bad
mistake, we lost the game and
were leaving the next day for
Chicago.
"When I walked into the
airport the next day, he was
standing there alone, so I had
to do something to get him up.
On the plane I came up with a
gimmick."
"Another time I met a guy
about three o'clock in the
morning, who had a ridiculous
story about how to beat
Boston," he said. "He was an
old watchman and was telling
me how to beat Boston."
" You have - to spook
Russell, he told me," said
McGuire. "You have to break
the tension.
"I knew the key to those
fellows and knew how to get
them to jump over the moon,"
he said.
"We'd talk basketball
anywhere, but when the game
starts, I'm the boss and nobody
was ever late for a meeting or
practice " he said.
une thing that you have to
be is the boss," said McGuire.
"And you have to have respect,
not to rob or beat people, but
you must know who the boss is
and if I said hold the ball they'd
do it.
"Pro basketball gets
grueling," said McGuire. "It's
a grind, a long year. They
actually pay the price, they'd
push away from meals, they
weren't drinkers. I've never
