Production in association Joffe Productions ert Ross Film rNa i)ANt I\E AWN maintments s USC Engi Accredit BY DAN TOWERY Gamecock Staff Writer For the first time, the University of South Carolina College of Engineering has been granted accreditation in the fields of civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering. The accreditation was issued by the Engineers' Council for Professional Development. Until this year, only bachelors degrees had been accredited . According to J.D. Waugh, associate dean, USC is one of only six or seven universities in the United States to have received the accreditation. "We have been ready to -receive such a grant," Waugh said, "but the Engineers' Council has just now decided to establish this type of program. Our attitude is simple. Anytime anybody wants to measure us for any legitimate purpose, we are ready." In order for the School of Engineering to receive their accreditation, it was visited by a team of five men from the Engineers'Council. The group could not be from the state or the southeast in order for their report to be fair and impartial. The visit included talks with the students and the overall impression the school left on them. The interviews were Colloquium Dr. Leonard Berkowitz, a social psychologist at the University of Wisconsin, will be speaking at the Psychology Colloquium Series on the topic, "Some Situational Determinants of Impulsive Aggression" on Thursday, October 4th, at 4:00 p.m. in Rm. 005 (Auditorium) of the New BA Building. neering edInThre made at random and often were nothing :more than stopping a student in the hall and asking him qLestions. "The Council has put regulations on the amount of publicity that can be given to the program," Waugh said, "mainly to keep it in good taste and not be able to criticize or condemn it." The faculty interfered in no way with the interviews. Spanish CI For Comin4 The USC Spanish Club will hold its first meeting of the school year at 5 p.m. today in the Keystone Room of Capstone. Club spokesman Mary Ann DeGhetto said the purpose of the meeting is to outline a plan of activities for the coming year. Elections will also be held to determine offices left vacant by departures of last year's members. The club is designed to foster interest in Hispanic life and culture for Spanish students and other interested parties. This year the club is sponsoring a series of five events. In addition to holding an ob servance of the Dia de La Raza Oct. 12, the club will also exhibit a series of films by Luis Bunuel and co-host guest speakers in con junction with Sigma Delta Pi, the USC Chapter of the National Spanish Honorary Society. During the semester the club will also sponsor El Almuerzo Espanol -an informal luncheon get-together every Monday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the South Building to speak Spanish and practice language skills. SOUTH Dept. e Fields "Now that we have received the accreditation our biggest concern is producing enough engineers to meet the demands of the factories that need them," Waugh said,"and by Christmas we will be out of students for these people to talk to." The school is growing each semester with eight women enrolled, bringing the total to fourteen women taking some form of engineering. ub Cranks Year DeGhetto said the semester membership fee is $1. Skills Classes Open With "Listening" The USC Counseling Bureau's Communication Skill Development Center is offering-three sections of "Effective Reading," designed to significantly increase a student's reading speed while allowing him to maintain good comprehension. Ron Hudson of the bureau said students may enroll in the course, which meets two hours per week, by contacting the bureau in the Pendleton building. The cost of the course is $20.00 which Hudson said covers the cost of materials needed for the course.
