Pol tIcs BY BILL OUTLAW Gamecock Staff Writer Political Science 201 will be featuring a section this spring con ;isting of taped television interviews with prominent Government Afficials in Washington. The course, subtitled "Conversations in American Government'," will have sixty half-hour tapes available to the student in the place of lectures. Interviews with S.C. Senators Hollings and Thurmond and Representatives Brian Dorn and Floyd Spence have already been taped and others are in the making. Dr. James T. Myers, associate professor of government and in ,ernartional studies, originated the idea to improve the overall quality >f the course and to reduce the size of lecture classes which Myers ,ermed as "overloaded". Myers said the usage of TV interviews is the only effective means >f bringing major political figures into the classroom. Myers said hese tapes are not lectures, but interviews which answer specific luestions pertaining to the course. For example, Thurmond liscusses. how a bill gets through the Senate and Dorn tells how it goes hrough the House. Other figures interviewed will be discussing topics ;vhich they are directly involved with. Tentative plans require the student to see four half-hour tapes a .eek in addition to being registered for a one hour discussion session >er week, for a total of three hours credit. Tape number one for the Neek will be shown on Monday running continuously from 10 a.m. till 6 ).m. Tape number two will be shown on Tuesday, tape three on Nednesday, tape four on Thursday and then all four will be shown all lay Friday. In addition to this, all four tapes will be shown consecutively on donday through Thursday from 6 until 10 p.m. This will give the tudent ample opportunity to view the tapes all at once or once a day. Ludio cassettes will also be made, to allow the student to take the riterviews home. The student will be provided with a study guide listing the lesson bjectives and the desired learning outcome. A list of review luestions will be included in this outline and from these review uestions an objective type test will be administered. The student will lso be responsible for assigned related reasings in the text. Seven of these sixty half hour tapes have already been made and 4yers hopes to have at least forty interviews prepared by Jan. Iyers said he started out with South Carolina figures in Washington, 'ut he has planned to expand to have figures from all over the country riterviewed. Already lined up are Congresswomen Bella Abzug, (D J.Y.), Congressmen Myers and Kenneth Heckle and Adm. Thomas loorer, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The tapes are filined in Washington studios which are the ones used vhen public officials film thier talks to the people back home. Myers aid he has received considerable help from South Carolina educational 'elevision (SCETV). USC Composer in residence, Don Gillis, has written an original nusical theme to give the program an air of professionalism.
