USC Building
Is Dedicated
University of South Carolina dedicated its ad
ministration building in honor of Rutledge L. Osborne of
Orange burg, long-time USC Board of Trustees
member.
Osborne, a USC Board of Trustee's member since
1947, was board chairman from October 1952 until
September 1970. He served as chairman longer than any
individual in the University's history. He was vice
chairman from 1950-52.
Osborne's tenure on the Board of Trustees has seen
the University's enrollment grow from 5,413 students on
one campus to approximately 25,000 students on the
Columbia campus and eight regional campuses. The
physical plant's value has grown from $9 million in 1947
to $101.73 million in 1972.
The newly-named Rutledge L. Osborne Ad
ministration Building houses the offices and staffs of
USC's president, provost, vice-president for business
affairs and vice provost for advanced studies and
research. The 32,000 square-foot structure, built in 1952,
is on Pendleton Street at the intersection of Bull Street.
During his period of board service, Osborne has
worked with the administrations of four University
presidents-Norman M. Smith, Donald S. Russell,
Robert L. Sumwalt and Thomas F. Jones-and with
more than 50 other trustees.
"Rut" Osborne was born in Anderson, March 18, 1895.
He is a 1916 University graduate and earned the
bachelor of arts degree. He also played football and
basketball at USC and participated in the same two
sports at Wofford College before transferring to the
University.
