SWEAR,. utch Square -- USC Building Is Dedicated University of South Carolina dedicated its ad ministration building in honor of Rutledge L. Osborne of Orange burg, long-time USC Board of Trustees member. Osborne, a USC Board of Trustee's member since 1947, was board chairman from October 1952 until September 1970. He served as chairman longer than any individual in the University's history. He was vice chairman from 1950-52. Osborne's tenure on the Board of Trustees has seen the University's enrollment grow from 5,413 students on one campus to approximately 25,000 students on the Columbia campus and eight regional campuses. The physical plant's value has grown from $9 million in 1947 to $101.73 million in 1972. The newly-named Rutledge L. Osborne Ad ministration Building houses the offices and staffs of USC's president, provost, vice-president for business affairs and vice provost for advanced studies and research. The 32,000 square-foot structure, built in 1952, is on Pendleton Street at the intersection of Bull Street. During his period of board service, Osborne has worked with the administrations of four University presidents-Norman M. Smith, Donald S. Russell, Robert L. Sumwalt and Thomas F. Jones-and with more than 50 other trustees. "Rut" Osborne was born in Anderson, March 18, 1895. He is a 1916 University graduate and earned the bachelor of arts degree. He also played football and basketball at USC and participated in the same two sports at Wofford College before transferring to the University.
