'Eston Marchant ieek Le L egislation giving USC authority to invest or lend money derived from non-state ap propriations will be requested by the Board of Trustees at their meeting Saturday. Board Chairman T. Eston Marchant said he and the Administration favored seeking such legislation. The USC practice of len ding money to the Carolina Research and Development Foundation (CRDF) to acquire land for future University use was questioned by state auditors in early summer. The practice was discontinued when Attorney General Dan McLeod ruled that the auditors' claim was correct. If the request is approved by the Trustees, the University will ask the General Assembly for a law allowing USC to use non appropiated funds for loans and investments. ive Point that the South Carolina Highway Department will recommend to the City Traffic Planning Group that Green Street be widened. Also, city council has not yet made a decision on closing the street for a month on a trial basis. Administrative Aide Jay Smith, who is in charge of the Green Street closing, contacted. the city traffic planning group in mid-August about a trial closing of the street but a decision has yet to be made. Both the Faculty Senate and Student Allocations Commission (SAC) have requested that the Athletic Department help fund club and women's sports. Paul Dietzel, athletic director, contends that he is only responsible for the eight intercolligiate sports supervised by the athletic department. Students and faculty of the Senate and SAC believe the See Page 2 Boycott? "They say thay can not close Green Street as long as Pickens Street is closed off to traffic," Smith said. "And that may be until next fall because the construction is so far behind." Smith said the lack of action could be aided by mere student support. "Green Street will be closed for Homecoming festivities and then the students can see what it would be like. I don't think they know. They put stickers on their cars but we need students who are willing to go to the ballot box if that is what it takes to get a city council that See Page 7
