After decades Of tvaIting, plan
ning, and construction, USC's
new Student Health Center is
open for business.
Situated between the Russell
House and University Terrace,
the four-story facility is one of -
the most well-equipped buildings
on campus and according to Dr.
Isoa Hirata, director, is responsi
ble for the triple increase in full
time medical staff members.
"Those old facilities scared
doctors off when they came to
see the campus," Dr. Hirata said.
"Now we have already signed up
or have coming eight full-time
people. The doctors have told
me the new building is the selling
point."
The design concept of the
Center is to get students in and
treated as quickly as possible. "In
the old infirmary, it was first
come, first served," said Dr. Hi
rata, "regardless of who was sick
est. Now students come in and
check with the sign-in desk,
where they will either have an
appointment with a specific doc
tor at a specific time, or will be
classified as walk-in patients."
Dr. Hirata explained that walk
in patients would be seen im
mediately by a nurse who would
decide if the student needed to
see a doctor right then, or if the
case were something like a cold
or minor cut that the nurse could
take care of.
"This means a student can be
in and out of here in a very short
time," he said. "Even if the stu
dent needs to see a doctor, one
will be available very quickly."

"By fall," Dr. Hirata said, "we
will have four full-time doctors,
each with his own office and ex
amining room. Also in the fall we
will have a full-time psychiatrist
and gynecologist, with a gynecol
ogist, with a gynecological clinic,
and an orthopedist and dermatol
ogist on consultation. Already
we're short on office space."
The new Health Center has
several features that were not
planned in the old building. Dr.
Hirata terms the new laboratory
"his pride and joy." Complete
with separate waiting room, the
new lab has "every piece of mod
em equipment possible. "Now
we can do our lab work here in
stead of sending it out," Dr. Hi
rata said. "It'll be done much
more quickly and cheaply."
For students who must stay
overnight, the old, multi-bed
wards must no longer be endured.
The third and fourth floors of the
Health Center contain semi-pri
vate rooms which are as well
equipped as most motel rooms
with closets, private. and shared
baths, adequate lighting and elec
trically controlled beds.
Dr. Hirata said boys were to
stay on one end of the hall and
girls on the other, with the
nurses' station separating the two.
A lounge is also set up on each
floor for the use of patients con
taining study carrels and a televi
sion, and decorated in garnet and
black.
