Golf Tea
USC's golf team wound up the
1973 season in fine style with Chip
Prezioso beating Georgia Southern
All-America Jimmy Ellis in a
playoff for the individual title at
Perry, Ga., Intercollegiate
Tournament and the Gamecocks
finishing second in team standings.
Prezioso, a freshman from
Columbia, shot a four under par 68
second round to go with a first
round 74 to tie Ellis with 142 after
the regulation 36 holes.
Prezioso missed a 10 foot birdie
if

putt on the first hole of sudden
death playoff but tapped in for par
while Ellis'"approach shot missed
the green and he took a bogey.
Georgia Southern won the team
title in the 10 school field with 580
based on the four best scores by
each team. South Carolina took the
runnerup trophy with 589, seven
stro.kes ahead of Auburn, and
Furman placed fourth.
The victory was the top
collegiate performance to date for
Prezioso as Ellis had won four

spring and is ranked second to Ben
Crenshaw of 'Texas as the nation's
premier collegiate golfer. Georgia
Southern's team is eighth ranked
nationally.
The Gamecocks five-man team
coached by Dick Melton includes
freshman Chip Prezioso of
Columbia; sophomore David
DuPre of Columbia; juniors Chip
Allen of Spartanburg and Os
Hillman of Columbia; and senior
Robert Boyle of Summerville.
