Housin<
By Betty Woodat
University students planning to
live in the new Bates West
dormitory have been given several
alternative housing prospects since
the dorm will not be completed
until December 1.
"We had planned to move into
the dorm gradually," Robert A.
Stewart, director of housing, said.
"But instead of completing each
floor as they went, the builders
went helter-skelter all over the
building. On July 10, they told us
no one could move in until
December 1, so we dropped
everything to come up with
suitable housing options."
Stewart said the easiest thing to
do would have been to cancel
everyone's reservation and refund
the money. Eventually, this was
one of the options offered. "But
that didn't solve the problem of
where the student would live," he
said. -
"After some investigation, we
got a lead on Sandwood Lake
Apartments on Decker Boulevard
about seven miles from campus and
we worked out some plans with
them."
The apartments became a
second, and the most popular,
option for students. With two full
baths, air-conditioning,
dishwasher, carpeting, and
swimming pools available, Stewart
described the two-bedroom
apartments as "plush."

amount, students will live there at
no extra charge from the original
Bates West housing fee. Stewart
said the University is paying the
remainder of the amount.
"Furniture for Bates West will
be used to furnish the apartments,"
he said. "The only problem is the
distan ce from campus. But most of
the students living out there will
have cars and we are working on a
bus service between there and
campus." Students who sign up for
bus service will be charged an
additional $30.
The arrangement at Sandwood
will only last first semester,
Stewart said, although he guessed
"that when students see what a
.nice place it is, they will want to
remain in the spring."
Another off-campus housing
location for the men who signed up
for Bates West will be the former
nurses' residence at Columbia
Hospital about three-quarters of a
mile from campus.
For the students who do not
wish to stay off-campus, Stewart
said the Housing Department had
been "pretty lucky to come up
with some alternatives."
''Since several Horseshoe
tenements were scheduled for
renovation next semester, we
postponed that and moved some
men into those rooms. Then there

"Women staying on-campus
have been given options of South
Tower or South Building studies,
or temporary three-girl rooms in
the Women's Quad," he said.
On-campus rooms have been the
second most popular option.
"This dorm not being ready has
been a tough situation all the way
around," Stewart said, "but I think
the University has bent over
backwards trying to find suitable
options for as many students as
possible."
