TO THE EDITOR: Open letter to Bob Craft: We think that your crush on Mrs. John Dean (ref. July 5 GA MECOCK) would make a.-great movie. Give us all the gushy de tails and we'll wrAte the script. Love, DAVID SIMPSON AND TER, RY DUGAS TO THE EDITOR. Open letter to Messieurs Sim pson ana uugas: i This correspondance is in reply to your letter of July 6, 1973, in which you ask graciously for my personal recollections of my "cr ush" on Mrs. John Dean in order to write a film script of them. I am very flattered, but I feel that I must decline for the rea sons that I shall outline. The first is that you show little personal insight into the reasons why I wrote the article to which you refer. It was not lust nor even a "crush" that prompted me to write this article. It was simple admiration, gentlemen, that and nothing more. It was tribute to the appearance of a lady as opp osed to a mere politician's wife. As an avid reader of H.L. Men cken, I am in full accord with his hypothesis that one of the chief evils of this country was perpet uated when Jackson came to po wer and sounded the death knell of any sort of aristocracy in this country whether it be bestowed by birth, wealth, intellectual or social achievement. As a result of this, the United States has become populated by the boobus Americanus, a bird that seeks not any eyrie, but the nearest hedge in which to hide himself. The United State's record In the Indochinese War and, yes, even the treatment of draft refusers bears elegant testimony to this. Mencken points out in his es say, "On Being an American," that most Americans, if not all, are like the British firebrands who heap insults and shouting upon the dukes, but know enough to take off their hats when a true duke passes by. To bring this all home, not only men, but women in America are herds in the gang with very few attributes to distinguish one herd member from any other. This has been recognized by more contemporary writers and I shall not blush to quote Norman Mai ler, "He (the Prisoner) knew of no harder feat in a technological society than for a woman to reach the deeps of femininity." So, gentlemen, when a woman appears who shows all the qualities of a true lady, a cheer must arise in the hearts of those who are not attuned to the spirit of the gang. It is here that I think you gentlemen lost the track of my thoughts. It is the thinking pro cess of the gang that cannot see anything but lust in words of genuine admiration from a mem ber of one sex to another. The herd, gentlemen, the gang. See beyond it! Examine the rea sons that cause you to think that admiration for a lady is de rived from physical attraction ra ther than by way of any of her other attributes. The second point of my re fusal is as follows and in truth gentlemen, you cannot be blamed for not being aware of it, as you do not know me well enough personally to have anticipated this point. And that is, gentlemen, my aesthetic sensibilities are more~dia wn toward those women who are not blonde, than to those. who are. I realize this must be ex tremely discomforting: to have me outline my personal idiosyn. cracies in a letter, however as it is contingent upon the terms of my refusal and yes, even to be offered as support -for my first point, I feel that embarrasment must be subdued to tell you. If examples are wanted, Diana Rigg in the role of Portia in the recent film of "Julius Caesar" could be offered as the type of woman who attracts me both physically and emotionally. A woman who is not a total sexual being, a woman who is gentle, loving and concerned about her man. A woman who trusts her condition to the evil humors or the night air to see what Is troubling him. Here, gentlemen, here we reach the heart of the matter. Inter action. That is to say, respons ibility for one's beloved. Kndwing them and being responsible for them. To love, first one must know the object of one's love. "Crushes" serve not the purposes of love, but neuroticism and In security. They are for adolescents and not for mature people. To use a coloquial expression culled from a popular song, "Unrequited love's a bore." Conversely, to have a purely sexual relationship is to have a hollow, selfish and destructive re lationship. It is sad to note, how ever, that our country is reveling in just this sort of relationshit lOs: BICY Quality' Europear Manufactured Byv: Sport. However, do not despair, I shall leave the door open. I will reconsider your proposal when you gentlemen learn to write. TO THE EDITOR: I hate to write this letter to you but, after all, you are re sponsible for the actions of your staff writers. Mr. Price, I am spec ifically referring to Harry Hope, your most talented writer. Mr. Hope, let me commend you on your tremendous stupid ity. I just love to read an article that has been written by someone who enjoys thinking that he knows what he is talking about but in reality, he is completely unin formed or ignorant; whichever may be your case or both if you'll recognize it. First, Mr. Hop, let's set the re cord straight. If you wish to state facts, then learn the facts. I am specifically referring to your in coherent statement about the Un ion's Video Tape Network Sys tem. Please, Hairy, let me know where you get that figure of $10,000 that vou said that the Union spent on this videotape system. It only cost $6,000. This is 40% less than your figure. Secondly, I would just love to see the tapes that were made of those Union punks and their friends that you were referring to. Oh Hairy, please inform the Dawson Bnys and Potliquor that they are union punks. Being national artists, they will love to hear it. The publicity, right Hairy? My second point refers to your remark about the Union being a money making organization. Mr. Hip, I thought that the Union was set up as an organization that would benefit the students. If my figures are correct, the only Union programs that even charge admis sion are the committees that put on programs for the students at PEED CLES Bicycles Fromn SI 00 Liberiam. I am also misinformed about the Union being a money making organization. I never knew that it was supposed to make a buck at students expense? Please let me know the true reason why the Union was set up if you know it. Mr. Hip, I love your remarks about the July 4th Celebration at Bell Camp. Please correct me Mr. Hip, but wasn't this July 4th Celebration at Bell Camp con ceived, planned out, put into action and manned by Union people. Let us remember, Harry, that most of these people were not paid for their participation in this Celebration. All the work ers at Bell Camp were volunteers who devoted their free time to an event that brought most of the people there at least one mo ment of happiness and enjoyment. In conclusion, Mr. Hate, there is no Hope for you. The press is supposed to report factual in formation, so why can't you get the bandwagon. Finally, if I could could use only two words to des cribe your literary style so far this summer, it would come out like this, Hairy cram it. CHUCK CROMER Open letter to Chuck Cromer: First-you say the videotape unit is $6,000. Thom Moody said it was $2,000. Jack Smith said it was $800 per camera. What are you guys trying to pull? Second-money-making or man agement, you are a failure. When Gamecock critic Bob Craft 6ffers his artistic opinions to the USC community, it costs 20 cents a column inch. When you, Cromer, offer your artistic opinions to USC, it usually loses a few tho usand dollars. As for Bell Camp July Fourth, I never condemned it. And I never made a pretense of objec tivity in my review of the event. And if it takes the University Union to bring me one moment of happiness and enjoyment, I'A worse off than even you think I am. In conclusion, I find your puns on my name boring. Throughout your letter, you never made one original, bright cut on my name. The least you could have done was to say something halfway intelligent.
