July Fourth, the national cele
bration. Most people don't really
care what they are celebrating.
They just figure it's been a long
time since Easter and Thanksgiving
and Christmas are far away.
So it was at Bell Camp. Most
people there were not about to get
misty-eyed and mushy about it's
being the 197th birthday of the
United States. They were there be
cause, for one reason or another,
they had nothing to do, and Bell
Camp was a good place to do no
thing in.
"Everybody" was there. Mothers
carted six-month-old kids, and fa
thers wandered about looking at
the women. Teenyboppers abound
ed. Couples joined with couples.
Groups joined with groups. Every
now and then a small group would
slip off into the woods for the
peace and quiet of the pine trees
and the upper lake.
The raft was so crowded that,
as you looked at it, you wondered
how the damn thing could possibly
hold another swimmer. Yet some
one was dog-pdddling intently to
ward the group. When he got to
the raft, they let him on. He just
disappeared.
All around the terrace little
groups sat on towels or blankets
or bedspreads soaking up the sun,
soaking up the surreptitious suds,
and in general feeling pretty good
about the whole thing.
The people at the ''lost pa
rents'' station were taking care o1
a five-year-old boy who had been
crying, but was feeling bet ter when

they told him his parerts were
over by the beach and he had bet
ter get over there because they
were breaking out the Cokes.
Around the videotape set-up,
Union people were fooling around
with the $2000 cameras and try
ing to take pictures of the pie-eat
ing contest. Spectators wandered
in front of the cameras and camera
girls were having a hard time. The
guy in charge strode back and
forth yelling at people to get out
of the way and generally acting
bossy and obnoxious.
The people at the free orange
drink stand kept filling and filling
the Burger King cups and didn't
seem to mind the number of per
sons wandering up and grabbing
cups to take back to their port
able bars.
The obvious groups were either
Union heavies, student government
officials and groupies or "with it"
administrators. You could see sev
eral soldiers, some in uniform, and
a number of alumni and some
non-students.
The voice over the loudspeaker
often sounded like the famous
jerk-off in M*A*S*H, only he
wasn't funny.
When the storm came up, the
lifeguard didn't see the first two
bolts of lightening. On the third,
he emptied the lake. A lot of peo
ple left, but more stuck around
for the evening.
It was July Fourth at Bell Camp.
A university vice-president said
that there were 1400 people there,
and that v'hen the camp first o
pened, they were lucky to get 50
people. It was a good gathering, or
festival, or whatever. People hadl
fun. And it kept them off the
streets for a while.
The good old American Mid
summer Festival.
