Ross Robinson, a Carolina jun ior, and Claudia Smith, a Clemson student majoring in horticulture, said they think their boss "didn't know what to do with us at first and gave us a lot of little 'extra' things around to do. "But now we mostly weed, water the plants, clip ivy and do other ground work. They don't ask us to do anything really heavy." Smith was the first girl to get a job in the department and she said she wanted it "because I'm a horticulture major and I thought n STITI Piz2 SPAGI Serving NC Located Act Out At USC Robinson said that their boss had gotten a lot of feedback about the two workers, and Smith added that people always wanted to know if they "are big women's libbers." "We aren't really," she said, "I'm learning a lot of stuff about insecticides, plants, just a lot of odd stuff that'll help me when I get back to school and start work ing." They both agreed that "it's hard work," but said that some things were more difficult than others. "We're usually on our knees crawling around in the bushes. We have to wear jeans and gloves, be cause this work really beats up your hands and it takes hours to get clean," they said. The consensus was that poison ivy was the worst thing that had happened concerning the job. "We had poison for two weeks," Smith said. "We couldn't even work for a couple of days and we still have it all over our arms." Although the women said that it did get hot sometimes, they said that it wasn't really all that bad. "These are good people to work for," Smith said, and Robinson agreed that "everybody is real nice. They don't hassle you. When we come in (at 7:30 a.m.) they tell us what needs to be done and give us a ride to wherever it is. Then they might check on us two or three times to see if we've finished and tell us what else to do." Although Smith will work all summer, Robinson will be quitting "in about a week," she said, "to go to summer school, maybe. But this will leave my spot open. 'When I applied, they had jobs in three areas--clean-up, painting and this one. I think they gave me this one because they didn't want me working alone with the men," she said. "'People almost always take second looks when they walk by where we're working. Some people will make smart remarks, but us ually not anything really bad."
