"High Rise" makes no pre
tense at being "art." The pro
ducers set out to make a superior
porno film and they succeeded
admirably. The plot is unimpor
tant since the viewer sees the
crew preparing for each shot. The
effect is one of viewing a porno
film In the making.

the producers use strikin#y u.
nique camera shots, (ever em
cunnilingus performed upside
down?) in bizarre sets, coupled
with a very funny musical score
("I've been bitten by the kissing
bug.") Shot in perfect color and
focus, often from a distance of
three inches, the result is interest
ing, both from an erotic and a
technical standpoint. The end re

It's over. The end of an era.
The saga of a world ruled by apes
has come to a close with Battle
for the Planet of the Apes. Thank
God. Not only has the idea thin
ned out considerably, but the
story line seems as if it were con
structed by some desperate,
young writer stashed away some
where in the bowels of 20th
Century Fox. It's amazing to see
how much a studio can squeeze
out of its product. In the "Apes"
case, it was also peeled, plucked,
and pulverized.
No other film in the last
twenty years has produced as
many sequels than PLANET OF
THE APES. In this case, as with
sequels to other films, the quality
and the care that was apparent in
the parent film continually di
minishes in the offspring. Where
once there was a desire to pre
sent a fresh, witty subject to the
screen, the desire is eventually
overpowered by the studio's con
tinual drive to exploit the pock
etbooks of the public.
But studios are out to make
money, you say? Correct. But
why can't they make it by pre
senting a product that wouldn't
insult the intelligence of a ten

that pornography can rise above
the "Deep Throats" of the genre
and have class as well as sex.
Only time will tell whether the
instances of violent crimes will
rise this week because of this
plague of explicitness. The most
significant aspect of all this is
that, at the end of the 8:30 show
Friday night, there was a carload
of uniformed po1e-sUp- standing
in the back of the theatWe.
Despte this official surveil
lance, the flim has n"t been shut
down, although it em"id be ruled
obscene by any Southern judge.
If necessary, I will testify that,
being the definitive satire on skin
flicks, "High Rise" occupies an
important place in cinema.
Meanwhile, bring your rain

likes the kind of fiOw you don't
have to spend three hours trying
to figure out when it was only
ninety minutes long to begin
with. It's good fare for the kids,
you say. Sure. It's only full of
nasty, mutated human beings liv
ing together in underground air
shafts who decide to get rid of
the apes altogether one day.
So they set out in their moldy
jeeps and school bus (yes, school
bus) and attack the village of the
apes. Caught by surprise, the
apes almost succumb before they
finally use their animal instinct
and jump out of trees just like
monkeys. And there are a lot of
explosions with apes and muta
tions flying all over the place.
Eat it up kids.
For some sort of social re
deeming value or (sic) message,
John Huston comes on as the
Lawgiver of the apes, explaining
quite morally (as all Lawgivers
are apt to do) that the fate of
apes and men lies In the future.
Well, so much for the fate of
man and apes. And so much for
BATTLE FOR THE PLANET
OF THE APES.
