"Don't you have any other senior
:itizens at the University?" asked
drs. Julia Colson Ballentine,
mzzled about why everyone was
iving her speciAl attention as she
nrolled for a course in Con
emporary Fiction at registration
rriday (June 1) at the University
)f South Carolina.
Mrs. Ballentine is 82 years old.
3everal months ago when she
:alled the University Admissions
3ffice and asked if she were too old
1o go to college, Admissions
Director Arthur S. West assured
her that she was not. So at
registration time Mrs. Ballentine
showed up (completely cool among
all the short skirts and long
haircuts), filled out all the proper
forms, and became the student
body's ranking senior citizen.
Actually Mrs. Ballentine wanted
to take a course in creative
writing, but since none is offered
this semester she settled for one in
contemporary fiction. She says
that whether or not she returns for

other courses will depend on how
well she does in this one. In line
with most other college students,
Mrs. Ballentine says that she will
try to get through the course
"without letting the professor find
out how ignorant I am."
She decided to enroll at the
University because, "I had plenty
of time on my hands and thought I
might as well make use of it." As a
matter of fact, she is involved in a
number of activities such as
keeping house, painting, mowing
her lawn, knitting, crocheting,
writing, flower growing, and
keeping a vegetable garden. ("I
had some very pretty beans and
potatoes last week.")
She has studied art and has sold
a number of paintings in Columbia.
One of them hangs in the Veterans
Administration Hospital and
another in the new library at
Lower Richland High School.
But now she had developed a new
interest-fiction writing. She has

One df 12 children, Mrs.
Ballentine was born in Anson, N. C.
in 1891 but was reared in Union,
where her father was a school
teacher. In 1916 she was graduated
as a registered nurse from what is
now Charlotte Memorial Hospital,
and in 1917 went to France as an
Army nurse, serving 18 months in
Bordeaux, France at Base Hospital

returned home to the States in 1923
to settle in Southern Pines, N. C.,
after which "life was just ordinary
living.".
She has two daughters, Miss
Edna Hooker, and Mrs. Betty
Elmore, both of Columbia. The
former, with whom Mrs. Ballen
tine lives, is associated with the
South Carolina Education
Association, and the latter teaches
at Crayton Middle School.
