Sur A recent survey completed by a political science student at USC, Wil liam Pawley, queried a random cross section of the student body and faculty to find out how they related to life at Carolina. To insure that he had a random sam ple. Pawley took a university direc tory, tore all the pages out and then shuffled them. The preface to the study which was researched by six other students: Mon nie Cooke, Andrew Graham, James Cope, Deme Bybee, Robert Johnson and Addy Gilmore, states its purpose. "It is the hope of the group that any developments discovered in this sur vey will help to improve the University in its role and obligations to the stu dents, faculty and social system in which it exists." 300 students and 100 faculty mem bers were questioned by telephone. Smith in ceremonies Saturday, April 28. Some 300 people attended thededi cation of the museum held in the Phy sical Sciences Center with a reception and viewing following in the museum itself located in LeConte. Principal speaker at the dedication was Paul E. Desautels, curator and supervisor of the Division of Min eralogy of the Smithsonian Institution. Desautels, one of the world's most re nown:mineralogists, spoke on the need for the Smithsonian and the need for all museums. Smith, professor emeritus of the USC Department of Geology, retired in 19*frog the University after40 years of service. In addition to serving as de partment chairman and professor, Smith also was state geologist for 13 yars.
