If Friday night's Carolina spr- a
ng game proved nothing else, fi,
t showed that a squad of 26 se
>layers, no matter how ga
iuperior, will have a hard time at
)eating a team of 53 players in Gi
i full football game. al
Carolina's Garnet team, com
lete with the Gamecock's 26
:est players, allowed a 26-point
ead depreciate to 26-21 score
in the fourth quarter, before
rinally holding on to win 29-21.
"When you play one team
without substitutes against a
team' with reserves available,"
Head Coach Paul Dietzel, who
atched the- game from the qi
press box, said, "it gets tougher 01
For the team without substitutes aj
as the game goes on." ir
The Garnet team, coached by t<
Assistant Coach Bob Gatling, f<
took advantage of two Black t4
mistakes to grab a 13-0 lead in s
the first quarter. Garnet defen- c
sive end Bob Roe was the key t
man on both plays, recovering in
a fumble for the first break and
blocking a punt to set up the sec- t
ond touchdown.
The Garnet team used four plays
to score after taking the ball on the t
Black 19 following Roe's recovery y
of a Ricky Whitt fumble. Jay Lynn i
Hodgin capped the short drive with C
a six-yard run.
Later in the initial quarter Roe t
blocked Larry Field's punt to give
the Garnet's excellent field position
again at the Black 14. This time Tom
Zipperly scored on a 10-yard run on
the second snap after the blocked I
punt.
For the first quarter and one-half I
the black team was able to contain
Jeff Grantz, the Garnet's quarter- I
back, but with less than five
minutes left in the half Grantz

ploded for 50 yards on one of his
ig touchdown runs which have
come typical for him in the spring
actices.
Grantz broke numerous tackles
ng the line of scrimmage before
iding himself alone in the Black
condary. The freshman's run
ve the Garnet a 20-0 advantage
the half. "That's one thing about
,antz," Dietzel said later. "He can
ways come up with the big play."

Hodg came up with another big
in for the Garnet early in the third
iarter when he took a handoff out
the veer and went 42 yards for
iother Garnet touchdown, expand
ig their lead to 26-0.
But sometime between that
ouchdown and the beginning of the
urth quarter, the Garnets began
) feel the fatigue of playing without
Libstitutes, and Dobby Grossman
ame on to guide the Blacks to three
)uchdowns in the last quarter.
First Grossman hit rising sopho
iore Scott Thomas in the back of
he end zone for a five yard
Duchdown. Three minutes later,
fter a fumble by the Garnet's
'ommy Amrein, Grossman hooked
p with Thomas for a 33-yard pass

tandy Spinks, who led both teams
n rushing with 111 yards, scored
in the next play.
Another Garnet mistake, this
ime an intercepted pass by the
Ilack's Randy Chastain on a hal
back pass by Hodgin, set up the
'inal Black touchdown. Bobby Hal
ninski capped the nine play, 45
rard drive by scoring on an 11-yard
Irive.
But the Garnet team shook off
:heir obvious fatigue to put
ogether one final drive, culminated
)y a 35-yard field goal by Bobby
darino, to clinch the game and save
k little of their prestige.
