MOSCOW - Leonid I. Brezhnev's position in the Kremlin
was strengthened Friday when the Communist Party Polit
buro underwent some changes. Two members of the Polit
buro were ousted and three were added for the first time
since Nikita S. Khrushchev was fired in 1964.
Sources say the moves were made to give Brezhnev com-s
plete support in his policy of increased relations with the
West.
MIDDLE EAST - Syrai was reported to have placed its
army on alert Saturday, and Israeli Prime Minister Golda
Meir said Israel is prepared for a new war- in the Middle
East.
Arab diplomatic sources said the Syrain government has
received "information indicating that Israel aggression is
imminent."
Syrian President Harez Assad plans to fly to Cairo Sunday
or Monday for consultations with Egyptian President
Anwar Sadat.
Meir said another war "might well come about."

WASHINGTON - Investigations into the Watergate bugg
ing brought some major developments and casualties
Friday.
Acting FBI Director L. Patrick Gray III resigned because
of disclosures dealing with his handling of the investigation
of the Watergate incident. He personally destroyed docu
ments last June from the files of convicted Watergate con
spirator E. Howard Hunt Jr. when other FBI agents were
seeking evidence to link Hunt with the bugging.
Gray resigned "to preserve in both image and fact the
reputation, the integrity and the effectiveness of the FBI."
John D. Ehrlichman, top presidential advisor, said he was
present when Gray received documents from Hunt's safe,
but he denied asking Gray to destroy them.
William J. Ruckelshaus, head of the Environmental
Protection Agency, has been named to replace Gray.
Both Hunt and G. Gordon Liddy burgularized the office
of Daniel Ellsberg's psychiatrist to obtain Ellsberg's
records, according to a government memo released by the
judge in the Pentagon Papers trial. Judge Matt Byrne has
ordered a full investigation to insure that none of the evi
dence introduced into Ellsberg's trial has been tainted.
President Nixon's campaign treasurer Hugh Sloan has
been accused of violating federal law by not reporting sec
ret cash funds linked to political spying by the General
