Dr. J. Leeds Barroll, speaking at c
the Folger Library in Washington, j
D. C. Monday to commemorate the I
anniversary of Shakespeare's birth, I
told a distinguished audience that
the computer is adding a new
dimension to professional studies of v
Shakespeare in the United States. 3
The Professor of English and a
Director of the Center for Shakes- '
peare Studies at USC says that
computer programming can help s
the Shakespeare scholar "...d
etermine the nature of the copy the
printer was printing.
"By meticulously looking at
every word that was printed in
every folio," Barroll continues, "we
can begin to determine precisely
what a certain printer composed
and printed as against what Shakes
peare perhaps intended."
Barroll, who claims there is more
serious Shakespeare studying
going on in America than anywhere]
else in the world and that South 1
Carolina is fast becoming one of the
most Important centers for Shakes
peare studies, spoke at the Folgeri
Library in Washington on the sub- I
ject "The Future of Shakespearet
Studies."

larroll.
Barroll says the Folger library
?ith more than half of the existing
hakespeare folios in its collection
nd the Henry Huntington Library
, California are the country's lead
ng centers for Shakespeare
cholarship.
"However," Barroll continued,
the University of South Carolina
s rapidly becoming an important
nstitution for the development and
he distribution of scholarly materi
ils relating to the great English
>laywright."
In addition to being the headquar
ers for the Center for Shakespeare
studies, Barroll said USC is attract
rig leading Shakespeare scholars
ncluding England's Trevor

aid USC press shortly will begin
