November 1970 addressing 1.5 mill

ing "the perfect knowledge of
truth" as a means to find inner
peace and harmony.
Guru Maharaj Ji has been spread
ing this word for three years now,
all over the world, with streams of
followers trailing along in as many
as seven 747 jumbo jets. Incredi
ble? It would seem so.
The guru claims a new approach
to religion in that he advocates no
approach at all to any particular
religion. The magnitude of his fol
lowing can be seen in the fact that
all religions are included in his
organizational structure.
Everyone can find and "receive"
knowledge,.the guru says, an
ancient knowledge of God, whether
it be the God of Western Christian
ity, or Buddha, or Krishna, or the
God of Mohammed, or the God of
ElVah Mohammad. With member
ship requirements like that, the
guru has a potential enrollment of
---everyone. Almost everyone any
way. It's hard to tell if atheists are
admitted to the club or those several
primitive cultures remaining
where tree worship is still in the
vogue.
Nonetheless in three short years
the Divine Light Mission, as the
organization is called, has opera
tions in 14 countries and has
recently set up here at USC.
The biggest single goal of the mis
sion, besides that of recruiting the
world masses to unselfish coopera
tion, is building a model city on a
metropolitan scale that would be an
example of how urban living could
become "peaceful" under the
auspices of "life, love and eternal
peace."
Planners of the city boast "unique
approach" to the present urban
problems of habitat, business and
social services,however their litera
ture lays down nothing definite.
