CarolIi By Vo Carolina high jumper Ron Adams set a school record and Buck Thompson won the discus, but Southeastern Conference powerhouses Tennessee and Alabama dominated Carolina in a triangular track meet Friday in Knoxville. The Volunteers finished first in the meet with 95 points, Alabama was second with 67 and the Gamecocks managed to collect 30 points while finishing third. Adams, whose prior best was 6-7 in a meet in Texas, went 6-8 to finish second and beat the previous school record of 6-7 set by Dave Smith in 1969. A freshman, Adams also holds the indoor high jump record for USC, 6-7. The Gamecocks only first place in the meet came from Thompson. The sophomores' 162-0 throw won the discus. Both of Carolina's relay teams finished second. The sprint relay team finished sec ond in 42.0 and the mile relay team were runner-ups in 3:14.6. Mike Sheley, although finish ing only third, ran the half-mile in 1:50.8, a personal best. Sheley's time was just over a second off the qualifying stan dard for the NCAA Champion ships of 1:49.5. John Brown was fourth in the event, timed in 1:51.8, his personal best. control.' "Now,I feel like they're not afraid to use me," continued Beam. Right now it looks like Beam has overcome all the adversity he has faced this season. Perhaps with just a few more weeks in his senior campaign Beam will be able to go out with the same effectiveness that propeled him to his best year last season.
