Soccer Club
BY FRED KIERNER
Sports Writer
Last weekend the USC soccer
ub played three exhibition games,
inning one and losing two.
On Thursday, the club, consisting
any interested student or faculty
ember, was defeated by the
venth ranked team in the nation
at year, Clemson, 9-1.
Using only two starters from the
gular team, which consists of
ily NCAA eligible players, they
aveled to Atlanta to battle with
.orgia Tech and Marist College.
krrying only 12 men with them, the
am was hurt very much when
phomore Ken Jefferson received
blow to the kidney.
This forced an already tired team
play all 60 minutes of the two
kmes. With five minutes to go
;ainst Tech the soccer club was
ading 2-1. However, with a 51
ar old assistant coach in the goal
;ipperly
ally encouraged by the veer
id the players running it.
"The quarterback is the key
>sition in the veer," Zipperly
>mmented, "because all the
>tions start there. Jeff Grantz,
in Rushing and Dobby Gros
nan all run the offense real
ell. Grantz has a lot of talent.
don't know who will end up
ith the job but Coach Dietzel
ill have a hard decision to
ake there."

replacing Jefferson, Tech scored
three quick toals to defeat Carolina.
On Sunday, however, brighter
things occured as the president of
the club, Ken McCord scored a hat
trick against Marist College and the
Gamecocks defeated them 4-2. The
whole team had to play all 60
minutes for the third straight game
and Head Coach Lt. Col. Dick Fer
nald said, "I was very happy to see
our strength after 270 minutes of
play."
On the possibility of becoming a
varsity sport Fernald said, "We
have talked to the Athletic depart
ment and they hope to get us in when
they can spend the proper amount
of time and money. All in all, we
-have a very good relationship with
the Athletic department."
In the near future the club hopes
to play a soccer team from the Brit
ish embassy. Also in, the planning
stages is a Soccer tlinic at Irmo
High School.

Hopefully, Carolina's
offensve line will be able to
open the holes for Zipperly and
his backfield mates Jay Lynn
Hodgin and Tommy Amrein.
"Most of the lin men are
seniors," the running back said,
"they all have experience and
know the ropes. And with guys
like Darrell Austin and Rich
Anthony the line is big and
strong."
Carolina hopes to revive an
offense which was far from
potent last year with a new
offensive set, ner coaches, a
sophomore quarte back and a
more experience line. And
don't forget that reconverted
running back.
