While losing the field events 32 31, the Gamecocks won the running events 49-33. F No records were set but Carolina did sweep the 100-yard b dash and took first and second in the 220-yard dash. Coach Bill McClure said, "We're very t happy to beat Clemson. Any 0 time you beat Clemson it's great." Injuries did play a factor as Carolina's two-miler Don Layden dropped out with stomach cramps after three fourths mile. This allowed Clemson to sweep the 2-mile. In the triple-jump Bruce Stuart pulled up short with what appeared to be either a pulled hamstring or a bad cramp. Stuart said the injury is a com- t bination of a hamstring pull and cramp. t However, USC's second jumper, Berle Stocks, came v through with a jump of 45 to c win the event. Even with his 1 injury, Stuart ended up in third 4 place with an earlier jump of 44 v 8/4 Tom Chapman, USC's javelin C thrower, tossed the javelin i 201 feet to win the first event s and the Gamecocks never fell IN behind. Carolina will travel to Knox ille Friday to compete in a 'iangle meet with Tennessee rnd Alabama. Dempsey Dropped From Track Team Carolina middle distance runner >b Dempsey was dismissed from *e track team for disciplinary asons, Coach Bill McClure said ednesday. Dempsey had been one of the unecocks' top quarter-miler and alf-miler. He was part of irolina's two-miler relay and mile lay.
