UNITED NATIONS - The Soviet Union's Ambassador
Iakov Malik said Saturday it would support sanctions
gainst Israel for its commando raid into Lebanon this week
'up to and including expulsion from the United Nations
is a state which has caused aggression."
A member nation may be expelled only by the 132-nation
General Assembly on Security Council recommendation.
It is doubtful that the nine votes necessary for a recom
mendation of expulsion would come from the Security Coun
il, and the United States would be expected to veto any
auch move anyway.
Israeli Ambassador defended Israel's right of self
defense Defense Minister Moshe Dayan has said Israel will
try to prevent any transgressions against its borders.

COLUMBIA - Dr. Carlos Gibbons, executive secretary

termination of Gibbon's contract.
Gibbons, secretary for nine years, has aroused con
troversy because of his support for salary increases for
teachers.
Gibbons will stay through June 30 when his contract

CHARLESTON - Secretary of Commerce Frederick B.
Dent has been named as a possible candidate for governor
if President Nixon encourages him to run.
Dent, former president of Mayfair Mills, has his perma
aent residence in Spartanburg.
COLUMBIA - Plans to use the Savannah River Plant in
South Carolina as a means of disposing of radioactive nuc
lear wastes has been abandoned by the Atomic Energy Com
mission (AEC), Sen. Ernest F. Hollings announced Saturday.
"I have never opposed clean and safe use of nuclear
energy. But I will always oppose the use of our soil as the
final resting place for the highly dangerous waste generated
from the commercial nuclear power industry," Hollings
said.
CHARLESTON - A three-day Japanese-American trade
conference began here Friday. Emphasis will be on increas
ing trade with the Southeastern United States, and represen
tatives from Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina
are attending.
Because of last year's $4-billion balance of trade deficit
with Japan, Secretary of Commerce Frederick B. Dent said
it was of "paramount importance" the deficit be balanced.
CHARLESTON - Linear features running from Washing
ton to Charleston, S.C., may be related to deeply buries
earthquakes faults, according to a United States Geological
survey.
Charleston still experiences slight earthquakes almost
every year, the survey said, but the features do not present
any known hazard or danger.
