The graduate students of the USC Col
ege of Journalism have organized into a
roup to improve relations with the
aculty and to allow graduate students
riore of a chance .to become actively
mvolved in the College.
Dave Nelsen, the president of Journal
sm Graduate Student Organization said
hat before the organization was formed
hat there was "no plan of attack" on prob
ems that faced graduate students.
Nelsen said that at the first meeting that
ipproximately 17 persons attended and
:hat five others who wanted to come
:ouldn not because of prior engagements.
rhere are approximately 40 graduate stu
lents in the College of Journalism.
Nelsen
Nelsen said that it was the first time,
to his knowledge, that such an organiza
tion has been formed on campus in any
college or school.
He said that the group's main objective
was to gain "a voice in the decision making
process."
The main focus of this at the moment is
getting graduate student representation
QP the Admissions Committee for
Graduate Admissions. "We want a voice
in who gets in," said Nelson, "Braduate
policy now is virgually open dorr." He said
that the organization would also like a
voice in faculty admissions.
Faculty response to the organization has

generally been favorable. Nelson said,
"There has been no confrontation. The
most negative thing has been apprehen
sion on the parts of some faculty mem
bers."
Dr. Henry T. Price, one of the faculty
"consultants" of the group said that he was
"surprised" that it had taken this long to
for such an organization to come into being
and that "it was bout time."
Dr. Price said that often "Graduate stu
dents are so busy being graduate, students
they feel that they don't have time for this
sort of ting." He said that he was pleased
that these graduate students "made time"
to start such an organization.
Other projects the group is planning are
an evaluation of all committees in the Col
lege of Journalism and so they can make
recommendations on their findings this
summer; a tutorial program for underg
raduates and to assist faculty members
during the pre-advisement. Another goal
of the organization was a voice in the
approval of tenure for faculty members.
Nelsen said "Students know more about
a professor's proficiency."
Nelsen said that the organization wanted
to avoid "an SGA-type affair". He said
"We don't want to get involved in bureauc
racy."
He said that he would like to see this
type of organization at other schools and
colleges in the University at both graduate
and undergraduate levels. Dr. Price said
that such an organization could
also be instituted at the underg
raduate level.
"We wish to raise intellectual
stimulation on this campus.
There are some very bright stu
dents who are makin NCs in this
school simply because they
aren't stimulated intellectually.
There are some equally bright
would be smaller students who throw themselves
s mentioned, Lee into their schoolwork and make
