Women Overlooked
To the Editor:
To begin with, I am not a
Women's Libber, but I do
believe in fairness. I am referr
ing to the lack of publicity for
the Women's Sports program at
USC.
Recently, the Women's bas
ketball team went to Regional
tournament where they took
second place in the tournament.
After winning there, they jour
neyed to Queen's College in
New York to play in the
National Basketball Tourna
ment for Women. They placed
sixth in the nation, which is
slightly better than the Men's
Basketball team did.
These girls worked hard, as
do all the women in sports at
USC, but we must take a back
seat and let the men get all the
publicity. We are not asking for
full page spreads on the women
in sports, but just a little cour
tesy from the Gamecock staff.
We work hard and enjoy what
we do, but it would be nice if
we had some support from the
newspaper representing ALL
the Carolina students, instead
of just the men.

up bill number 2-21-73-33 which
provides for study, evaluation
and codification of all laws,
rules and regulations affecting
students at USC. The bill was
passed unamiously by the Sen
ate, President Spinazzolo
vetoed it and the Senate over
rode the veto because Sen.
Manning and others refused to
give up.
It's an honor to be among the
very first to say that this legis
lation is greatly needed, long
overdue and we are fortunate
to have Glenn Manning in the
Student Senate. I attended the
senate meeting last Wednesday
and was spellbound at the
exuberant and dynamic presen
tation he made in defense of the
bill.
Manning impressed upon the
senate the fact that one of the
most pressing factors in a
student's life is having too many
rules and regulations affecting
him. If this is done, he will
always know where he stands.
In essence, he has a right to be
informed.
Sen. Manning is representing
district 19, Off-Campus Law
Students. I must send cheers
over to the law school for elect
ing Manning because you coul
dn't have elected a better rep

You really deserve a star in

To the Editor:
As a new freshman this
semester, I must say that I am
a little baffled at the number of
religious zealots which seem to
swamp the Russell House on
various occasions. It really dis
turbs me to see people trying
so hard to escape reality. Please
permit a few words as an alter
native to all the "rain dancing"
and superstition that these
religious groups propound. I
think that many of these groups
try and answer the age old ques
tions of "Who am I", "What is
the purpose of existence", "Will
I get to Heaven?', and "How can
I lead a good life?".
Who are you? Physiologically,
you are a complex organization
of cells and fibers which, thanks
to the process of evolution, also
have a large brain to coordinate
thinking and behavior. You are

long process- of life that exists
here on earth. As a popular song
once said, "You have a right to
be here."
The final purpose of our exis
tence is undeterminable. It is in
the nature of Man to attribute
human qualities to ultimate
reality but we must remember
that this concept of ultimate
purpose lies in the realm of that
which is unable to be defined
in any way. I would suggest that
the purpose of your existence
be determined by a rational and
intelligent outlook on life. It is
obvious that nothing can be
proven without the aide of
rationality, reason, and science.
You may be advised to have this
elusive thing called "faith" but
faith is merely believing in
something for which there is no
evidence. If you as an individual
choose to do that, then it is your
problem.
Will you get to Heaven? Prob
ably not. We simply do not know
what happens after we die and
anyone who says that they do
must have been dead at one time
or another.

We do know that nothing is
changeless and that everything
is in a constant state of becom
ing. This may cast a little light
on what to expect that fateful
day.
To lead a good life all one
needs to do is constantly strive
for a balance between emotions
and reason. You must believe
that given enough facts and
information the truth can be
determined in any given situa
tion. -
Most people find if difficult
to bear the responsibility of
their individuality. They tend to
put the continual burden of a
moral self-responsibility off in
the vague and highly emotional
state of some "revealed relig
ion". Also, many people cannot
accept the fact that we are alone
on this planet and most prob
ably in this solar system.
Let us turn, then, back to that
which has been suppressed and
denied especially by our zealot
friends: simply our own minds,
bodies, and earth.
